is listed in"processes" of my Task Manager in XP-Pro as a system file invariably using up 100% of CPU resources.

What the hell is it and what does it do? If I end the process nothing untoward seems to happen but it restarts after about 5 minutes.

Could I safely delete it?

it's legit, although I've heard a lot of people turn off (not delete) this MS indexing service because they think it's unnecessary
