Did a part time camp over the weekend at the big Endlish Village that was built by the Korea Herald. it was the one that recieved a lot of news on opening day, and had the Ambassador from australia and his wife there for the opening day. Anyway we did our weekend bit with about with about 100 students (8 teachers), and found the facilities quite elaborate. Hospital room, Restaurant, living room, library ( well stocked with books about New Zealand), Art room, hotel, Police station, postoffice , bank. and TV studio. They got a movie theatre, and a karaoke room too. Don't know how long it will take before students wreck everything though.

Anyway come paye day a couple of teachers felt they should have gotten more money(justfiably), so one of them (big dood) got quite voiciferous. His words were "Out of respect for the ladies here I won't, but if they weren't here I would have taken your f... head off". Off course the shejangnim smiled, because he didn't understand what was being said. We all of us thought "Oh Gezz what's next". He might just have plonked him one to knock the smile off his face. Luckily for us though one of our other co-teachers was a kyopo, and she quickly explained to the director what the problem was, and he quite happily pulled out of his pocket some extra money to give us. Dumbass korean helpers knew what might have transpired, and could have diffused the situation, but it took another co teacher to explain everything in Korean to him before he would paye up the extra money.

Have been in other situations like this where the spokesman for the group of expat teachers didn't pull any punches. He didn't mince any words. said that he'd blacklist the institute, report it to the labour board etc etc etc. We were all there, and we got what we wanted.

Most times it's the only way to deal with them. Hit em hard from the word go.

I think most of them understand more than they care to admit. Kinda like they understand or hear what they want to hear....most times if I say something they don't want to hear....they pretend not to understand. Surely, they understand most other times.

Whats it like to work at one of those? I always thought Id feel like a freak on display at a zoo or something. How are the conditions? Housing? Pay(e)? Hours? Overtime? Location?

The Koreans' credit history spoils everything. The Aussie Ambassador, newspapers, TV, ribbon cutting, kids and of course used car salesmen ethics. Why ruin it that way? Good on the big dude. Good on him.

I was told by Kim In Bong and the other, younger Kim (the really creep looking younger one who is the Supervisor of the Education Department at The Korea Herald at Eulchiro Station) that English Village pays 1.5 for 160 plus classes per month! He also said that the housing is like living in a goshiwon.

I've heard that the English Village was built to provide English classes for the majority of students who don't have parents rich enough to send them to hogwons or abroad for Endlish lessons

There are 300 students in attendence each week and they paye about W120,000 for the whole thing. Includes meals and accomodation. There are about 35 permanent foreign teachers domiciled there and another 10 to 15 Korean teachers assigned to the programe. I guess certain schools are informed in advance that their turn is coming up, and they fill their quota of students.

Accomodation isn't bad for the students. Two students share a room which is joined by a connecting shower and toilet to another room with another two students. 4 students per accomodation. Meals are'nt too bad either, and students can go through the meal line as many times as possible until all the food is eaten

I've heard that it's been so succesful that they are going to build another similar facility in Seoul and one also in Pusan

I would bet high on the culture part, but not the English part....

I don't think the dude was out of bounds in telling the director that. It seems a bit obvious that the guy was trying to pull something as he had the money in his pocket. I had a director pull the same thing on me. I went nuts on him and then he pulled the exact amount out of an envelope in his pocket. If I didn't go nuts would he have pulled the money out? I took the money and still quit. I don't have the time or the energy for bull shit like that. That was my last teaching job Very Happy
