38% of New TB Patients in 20s, 30s
A total of 31,503 new tuberculosis (TB) patients were detected last year, of which 37.5 percent were in their 20s or 30s. The number of foreign TB patients has been on the rise, calling for more comprehensive monitoring measures.
South Korea is anticipated to have 91 TB patients per every 100,000 people as of 2002, far higher than 33 patients in Japan, five in the United States, 12 in Britain and 14 in France.

I was warned by Candian health officals about Tuberculosis before I came to Korea. It is a serious problem. That is one of the reasons I have a problem with the digusting spitting that is endemic in this country. You can catch Tuberculosis from it. Not hub of Asia. It's grub of Asia. |

TB Infections in Korea Highest in OECD
Korea has the highest rate of new tuberculosis infections in the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development with more than 30,000 people contracting the disease every year. In terms of treating pulmonary disease the world's 10th largest economy is a developing country, a report released Wednesday by the Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) shows.
About 170,000 Korean people are being treated for TB.
Japan has 10,700 beds for TB patients, who are treated in quarantine and can be put into hospital against their will if necessary. In Korea too, the TB Prevention Law allows doctors to order TB patients to be hospitalized, but there have been no instances where that happened in the last few years, the KCDC said. Korea has only 900 beds for TB patients.
