|
|
Went on a visa run Thursday March 24 and came home Sat. the 26th. Wish I could have stayed one more night but could not get a flight that would come back Sunday. Anyway, I was so worried, but I had the best time. Of corse started out with a problem....got the ticket, and then the next stop immigration, and they said my visa expired March 4... I said here is my e-2 and it expires April 4. The girl said no, it is not what is on the e-2 but on the visa stamp Of corse I never looked at it. So, she called the office, told me to go there, and I said i'm sorry, I didn't know. Well, I had to just pay 30,000 for a single entry visa They were so nice, but I felt like an idiot. Also I could have been fined up the wazoo, but was not.
So, got to Osaka at 4pm, too bad I didnt have an early morning flight, but of corse the school made these reservations a week before so my choices of times were not good. The information at Osaka made reservations at a hotel by the counsulate, 1300 yen for 2 nights. Yen is the same value as won these days. Took the bus to the hotel, cost 800 yen. There are loads of hotels there, but I havent a clue about the prices. But this hotel was so nice, and all the employess spoke English very well. 2 computors in the lobby and internet access is free. Great breakfast buffet for 700 if you pay the night before, and 800 if you pay the same day. Next morning I wanted to get to the embassy at 9. The hotel gave me a map, said it was a 15 minute walk. Well, 5 minutes i'm walking and say to myself "Hey, look at this really cool building with the Korean flag!". And then kept on walking. 5 minutes later I say, "Joanne, you are a moron, you walked right past the Korean Embassy". So, back tracked and filled out the form, walked around, saw a sports arena and saw the signs for Sumo Wrestling Championship , and walked around, and then bought a 6000 yen ticket, and had the best time. You can leave once and then come back in. So went in at 2 till 3:20, went back to the embassy, got my visa at 4, talked to some people, and then from 4:30 till 6 had the best time. Sumo Wrestling is super. Corse I am not a good photographer, but I did get some great shots.
Anyway, if you exit 25 at Namba station, about face and you see a mcdonalds, continue straight and the Embassy is a 5 minute walk. I was so worried but did not get lost. Also if you walk past the embassy and stay on the same street and look left, you will see a beautiful shrine, and I heard if you keep walking down that same street there are other temples but I went there Sat before the plane, and only saw one cause I really had no time. But I did see Sumo Wrestling and how many people get to do that? http://www.dotonbori-h.co.jp |

Jjincha babo ya!
First, you spelled (or spelt, for the Brits) "course" incorrectly as "corse." Not once, but three times.
Second, your narrative asks readers to believe that two nights of hotel lodging in Japan cost you a mere 1,300 yen (13,000 won) instead of the 13,000 yen (130,000 won) it should have cost.
"Yen is the same value as won these days." What?! WTF?! Are you out of your mind? Babo ya!
Silly poster, Trix are for kids, not for you! Go back and re-read what you posted, and by all means correct it to read as a lucid whole.
*Edited thanks to Grotto's sharp eyes. I didn't self-edit nearly as well as I should have. No banana from Grotto to this so-called "dumb ape." The rest of what Grotto wrote, including his PM, is shite. So there! Nyaaah!

O.K, O.K, I did leave out a "0". And yes, the hotel was 13,000 yen. Forgve me. And I forgive you for ranting and raving like a 2 year old with your stupid comments.
Does it bother you that my spelling is bad? This is "Dave's" for goodness sakes; I am not writing a term paper (and then I use spell check).
And your answer to "WTF",the won IS the same value as the yen these days, just like it is the same for the $, give or take a few cents.
No, I did not go to any bars. |

It looks bad. We're teaching English. An inability or unwillingness to properly use the language you're being paid to teach strips you of any authority. I would assume people post to message boards, even Dave's, because they have something to say, want people to read what they say, give comment, and sometimes even sway opinion. If you write like a pile of soju soaked vomit, no one will bother to read what you have to say. |

Writing isnt a big thing here....many posters make mistakes often. It is just that there are some smug posters who take it upon themselves to be the language police.
It may look bad but if you feel that you must correct someone's writing then be smart enough to do it through a PM instead of attacking them in an open forum. It doesnt benefit them or you.
Mark Twain once said "Its a poor writer who only knows one way to spell a word" |

Hell, it makes me feel better and makes them look like the idiot they are. I don't see a negative here.
Seriously, I'm sure that so-called English teacher had important information to impart about Osaka. But her writing is so pitiful, it's hard to read. Her style makes me not want to read it or anything more by her save for scanning for the text "and here's a link to a picture of my fun bags". |

I agree with the posters who have criticized the OP for her lack of care in writing her post. While her post could have provided valuable instructions for those on an Osaka visa run, it didn't. Instead it was difficult to read and contained misinformation. Kudos to Canucksaram for pointing out the mistakes, specifically on what the OP paid for her accomodations.
Of course, we are not graded on our contributions to these forums and need not worry about occasional typos or misspellings. However, there is something to be said for providing information clearly, concisely, and in such a manner that one doesn't need a decoder ring to understand it.
I'll quote mindmetoo here, because he makes an excellent point and it bears repeating:

Not necessarily true...look at the crap you two upstanding icons have spouted out.

If that is what it takes for you to make yourself feel better about yourself then thats just sad. No....its actually sad and pathetic.
I can just imagine your emails home:
Today I attacked and insulted a total stranger just to make myself feel better. I attacked her typing skills and called her an idiot. I am the man! Mom, dad aren't your proud of me?
Nothing wrong with some helpful constructive criticism but you could have done it all with PM instead of publicly.
Is it helpful to call someone babo?
The negative, Mindmetoo. is that you come off like an assxxxx when you spout tripe like that.

You know some people could attack this for its poor sentence structure.
Correct it into? Just what does that mean you dumb ape? Boy you are so stupid posting a mistake when you are attacking someone elses post. 'Correct it into to read'....boy you must be retarded or something to make a mistake like that. |

Second that Grotto and something to add...
Mindmetoo, I could rip you for assuming. But I won't, I have grown out of that stage in my life. We have all seen/heard it before, and we have all seen/heard folks correcting spelling mistakes. Spare me please!
However, I would like to know how much it costs(if I can trust the calculations) to see the sumo wrestling. Is this place down a side street just off the maid drag there by the Korean office? If it is I think I've seen it before as a big sumo wrestler stood outside as I walked by.
I have seen sumo wrestling on T.V., why would I want to pay when I can walk a few more yards to get a Japanese massage? A real massage folks, I went once and it somewhat hurt. But it felt great especially after waking up early, being transported by bus, plane, train, and waiting for the Koreans to get my papers in order when I then turnaround and return to my starting point.

From what I've seen of you on this board, Grotto, you deal with differing viewpoints by bullying, name calling, and using inflammatory language rather than by making a persuasive argument. It's too bad, because sometimes you do make a valid point, but it often gets lost in the clutter. Case in point:

I think there's a valid point in there, it's just hard to make it out. Oh wait, I think I found it. Let me put it in bold so that everyone can see it. You're welcome.
Personally, I didn't think that Canucksaram was trying to be malicious with the "babo" comment, but rather was trying to be lighthearted while still raising an issue with the original post. Clearly other posters didn't perceive it the same way I did. Fair enough. One must be extra careful when throwing around what could be perceived as an insult, especially in a critical post. Don't you agree, Grotto?
And perhaps the original criticism should have been made in a private message as a courtesy. It wasn't, and therefore I think the issue of clarity in posting has been raised and is fair game for debate. Perhaps as a separate thread from this one, but debated nonetheless.
Lastly, I do think that you, Grotto, should begin to practice what you preach. I mean, really, was it helpful to call Canucksaram a "dumb ape," or to suggest that he is developmentally delayed? What purpose does it serve to call mindmetoo an "assxxxx?" Especially when you were offended by him calling the OP "babo." You told Canucksaram that he was wrong to criticize another's grammar, then you attacked his. You're getting the point I'm trying to make, right?
If you wish me to elaborate on any points or wish to debate further, I'd be glad to. However, considering how I've watched you argue in the past, I'm not holding out much hope for anything more than insults and bluster. Prove me wrong. |

Yeah, what Draven said!
Being in Korea, one quickly learns that the "babo ya!" comments that fly fast and loose between people are not taken as personally -- or as seriously -- by most folks here as the term "stupid" is in the West.
Grotto, I edited my post. The one error I made was bad, I'll admit it. I should have re-read my post one final time instead of surfing for more porn. |

The term babo ya may fly fast and furious among friends and people who think an insult is some kind of term of endearment.
Draven I was hoping that the " You know some people could attack this for its poor sentence structure." and the would communicate the sarcasm I was trying to express in that passage. Apparently I either failed to communicate the sarcasm and disdain I was trying so hard to get across. Or perhaps you are just too obtuse to comprehend it.
Interesting that you support people who use the tactics you accuse me of using. Kind of two faced isnt it?
Anyways....you may feel free to place me on your "do not read" list. I promise I wont be offended. |
