Apologies for posting yet another message asking about a city. I already posted a message asking about Icheon where i had a job in Icheon but it has since fallen through. Anyways i've got an interview for a job in Gunsan in the Jeollabuk province. Can anyone tell me what it's like - things of interest around there, any nightlife, are there many foreigners. I've searched the net and can't find much about it at all except that an air force base is close by. I'd greatly appreciate anything anybody can tell me. |

I liked Gunsan, but I think it helped that I had a lot of friends in Jeonju and in other Korean cities and spent most of my weekends away. There are other foreigners, but it may not be easy to meet them -- a lot depends on you. There is some sort of nightlife, but I wasn't particularly involved in it, so can't say much about that -- hopefully someone living in Gunsan right now will respond to your post. Which hagwon or school are you considering there? Will you be working with other foreigners and if so, have you had any contact with the them? Also, have you spoken with the foreigner you'll be replacing? The other foreigners at your school can help you contact other foreigners in the area, and hopefully some friendly English-speaking Koreans. Moreover, they can let you know what it is really like to teach at that school. If I were you, I'd ask the director for the e-mail address of other foreigners working there, or for the e-mail address of the teacher who is leaving. If your director refuses, don't accept the job. You will have a much better time in any city if you don't hate your job, and particularly a smaller city like Gunsan -- the conditions of your job really matter. |

The name of the school is English Plus.
I've got my interview on Tuesday and it's another foreign teacher who is going to conduct it so i should get the opportunity to ask plenty of questions. The job sounds good from the description i've been e-mailed and as far as i know the other foreign teacher would continue to teach in the school as the new position has been created to ease her workload.
Thanks for the info Casey's Moon and Andrew. |
