OK, I can understand why there may be ashtrays in public toilet stalls. It helps with the plumbing. But why on earth are there ashtrays next to some urinals? First, in theory it's illegal to smoke in most public buildings, so it's not like some guy would be outside smoking, suddenly realize he has to use the john, and then waltz through a department store with a lit fag in his hand toward the head. Plus, how long does it take to take a whiz? Do you need a cigarette to help you loosen your kidneys!? And why can't you just flick your ashes in the urinal?

In summation, smoking at urinals, and ashtrays at urinals, is stupid.

At least if there are ashtrays near the urinal, some people will be less inclined to fling their ciggies into the urinal whilst having a wee, or better still, throw it on the floor. Usually with a healthy dose of phlegm to help douse the thing.

Come have a walk around the men's toilets on my uni campus at around, say, 5 o'clock. You'll see what I'm talking about.

I have been lobbying for two things at my uni since I've started working there: 1) a cable car that runs from the foot of that fucking Christing hill that stretches up to my office building, and 2) ashtratys in the toilets, even though there are no smoking signs everywhere.

I was at The Galleria, a department store in Daejon, and saw a dude just standing there smoking away, and rather hurriedly, I should add. But, there was also a cup on the counter with butts in it, and cigarette butts on the floor in the stall. And this was at a very nice department store. I asked my friend about it and she said it's not normal.

I'm just guessing here, but maybe the ashtray-by-the-urinal is there so guys have a place to put their cigarettes while their hands are otherwise occupied.

Maybe we need a poll: How many hands do you use when going wee-wee in a urinal?

O Look Ma, no hands!
O I'm a one-hander myself.
O Using two hands shows you respect other people.
O Three hands: skinship is good.

I'm fervently against ash-trays at urinals as it makes for less butts to play the, 'break-up-the-butt-with-your-firehose' game.

Partly agree with that one, a fun way to while away the time spent in the bathroom, good target practice too.

My favourite sign in my dad's local pub in England says 'Please don't drop your dogends in the urinal. It makes them soggy and hard to light''.

Got to love self depreciating British humour.
