Sometimes, reading this board cracks me up! You've got the "Koreans only want to talk to me to practice their English" threads, the "Koreans are too shy to speak English to me" threads, the "Koreans never understand my Korean" threads and the "Koreans never speak to me in Korean" threads!

I guess if you're looking for it, you'll find it! Laughing Laughing

Should there be a thread for modern ajumas?

Women aspire to be housewives without any of the housework
Mothers are rejecting equality in the workplace and prefer the idea of becoming full-time housewives - but not ones who actually do housework.
Instead they want to play the "role" of housewife with a little help from, for instance, a nanny, and someone who does the ironing.

I have to add some.

There is a thread about "freaky, cocky, depressing, rude Waegooks". And when Koreans do feel the same there comes "the most xenophobic, racist anti-(name a country) people in the world" thread. Most of you have left your own country temporarily or not but still you giggle at news about Koreans wanting to leave Korea for their own needs. You simply label people "apologists" at any slightest comment favoring Korea when in fact this site is full of "western apologist".

After all, this borad isn't much about Korea. This is all about you. That's why I(as a Korean) can't stop coming back. For those who really want to know about Korea, it would be better to learn some Korean and go to Korean web sites instead. This one is a great source of information for people who want to know what the average western university graduates are.

True. This board is startlingly inaccurate when it comes to giving people a proper 'feel' for Korea and Koreans. I always come here and think, "man, what country are THESE people in?" This board is a lot of fun but it's only useful for answering really concrete questions like "where's that club in Hongdae" or something like that.

PS-- Anybody who talks like they fully understand Korea and doesn't speak fluent Korean is a moron.

Hell, yes. I'm GLAD I didn't know of this site before I came here, 'cause there's a good chance I may not have even come in the first place. From both the negative views about Koreans and the snarkiness of SOME of the foreigners.

C'est ca, again. I definitely haven't earned my 100% Amazing Miracle Fluency Cookie yet, but I know enough to be able to have decent relationships without doubthing the sincerity of my friends ("They all want to practice English", "They don't treat you the same"...blarblar...) I won't even say I'm anywhere CLOSE to thinking I understand this n' that about some of these folks, but I reckon I'm a hell of a lot closer than those whose vocabs are limited to the usual standbys... Makes a big difference, and is probably the main reason why I don't biatch about everything for 75% of my waking hours.

There are two perspectives of Korea. In one a bunch of outsiders look in, in the other the insiders look out. In my opinion, both are equally valid.

Agreed, to an extent. I study Korean, but I am only at an intermediate level, and thus close friendships with Koreans who can't speak English are beyond my reach. However, the more one learns Korean, the easier some Koreans can communicate their prejudices. The bitter hatred of the US that envelops this country is far more detectable when engaging Koreans in their own tongue. (and they have no reason to hate the US at all)

It certainly isn't the definative guide to Korea, but this site is useful for Westerners who would otherwise have to vent their anger in front of Koreans. Surely as a Koreean you would agree that this site is preferable to the latter scenario.

That's nonsense. Language helps, but doesn't preclude someone from not being able to understand this country.

Sometimes we all stand in front of a window staring at things. But later we realize it was just a mirror. A mirror and me...

huh?? It doesn't preclude someone from not being able?

Well.....does it not fail to stop someone from not doing the opposite of ceasing to not refrain from the precluding the non-understanding of this country?

The "language fluency = knowledge of country" thing is often overrated. Some of the most insightful books about Korea in English have been written by authors with limited or no Korean ability. And I've heard some of the most astute observations on Korea from tourists.
