I just read these two articles:
Korea Steps Up Military Cooperation With China
Military exchanges between Korea and China will intensify to a level similar to those between Korea and Japan, Defense Minister Yoon Kwang-ung told reporters Monday. Yoon's comments appear to confirm whispers of greater Sino-Korean cooperation following President Roh Moo-hyun's comments that Korea will act as a stabilizer between opposing forces in Northeast Asia. >>Full Text

Tokyo Governor Slams Roh's '3rd Rate Politicking'
Tokyo Governor Shintaro Ishihara on Sunday fired a broadside at Korean President Roh Moo-hyun, saying his criticism of Japan was a "a third-rate political technique" to recover popularity at home. Appearing on a Fuji TV interview program, Ishihara said Roh's repeated criticism of Japan was "a stopgap measure for President Roh to recover some of his popularity."
What is South Korea thinking? Do they think they are big enough to start political wars with the Japan and the U.S? How big do they think they are? And................do they think China is just some friendly giant who they can trust? It was just a few months ago they were burning Chinese flags when China tried to claim ties to Kogory (sp), and for roughing up some Korean diplomats. |

Korea is "punching way above it's weight" and is going to get knocked out if it keeps it up. Alienating Japan and the USA and cozying up to China is akin to national suicide.  |

Guri Guy, I don't know, you may be right. But I wonder if what we're seeing now isn't so much a conscious effort to alienate the former as it is a reflexive urge to placate and cozy up to the latter.
People like to "liken" these things, and if I were to, I'd liken it to the bully on the block (China/NK). You can join a loosely formed neighbourhood watch-group in the hopes of keeping the bully in check and on his best behaviour. Or, if you sense that the bully might gain the upper hand, you can publicly and noisily declare close friendship & mutual respect with him out of fear or self-interest, while still paying lip-service to, and insisting on genuine affiliation with the old neighbourhood alliance.
However one chooses to view it, though, the results are the same at the end of the day. Could we be underestimating Korea's skill at licking boots, or China's own amusement at having its boots licked? If that's indeed what we're seeing, then so be it. Everything happens for a reason, I suppose. Such an oversight would be forgiveable in our case, though not in Washington's or Tokyo's.
Oh yeah, um... best of luck, Seoul. I rather think you're going to need it. Balancing acts (okay, "stablising roles" if you prefer) like the one you're playing are prone to nasty spills, in addition to being largely unnecessary.

wrong
interrogative present continuous that is asking a question he thinks is unfinished. "Has gone" would imply that the process is complete. |

True.
The process started a long time ago, and is not yet completed. |

The Grand National Party yesterday recruited a Chinese Communist Party official into the Dokdo campaign, at least symbolically...."Korea and China share the same opinions and understandings of many problems."

Wonderful. Korea and China have so much in common. They both hate Japan. Perhaps big bad old China can back Korea's territorial claim on Dokdo. In return Korea can back China's territorial claims on places like Taiwan and North Korea. Oops  Maybe that won't work. Better not open Pandora's box Korea... |

| As the Berlin Wall was coming done, S Korea made it a priority to establish relations with Eastern European countries as a way of isolating N Korea and expanding their own market. Cozying up to mainland China may be seen as the last step of this policy. |

Just what does that mean, to a level similar to...Japan.

I was't aware that there was a great deal of "military exchange" between Korea and Japan.
At any rate, I don't see a Chinese invasion looming anytime in the near future, and if Korea can somehow land contracts to supply say, daewoo assault rifles to the massive army in China, that's a whole lot of revenue. But I somewhat doubt that we're talking anything the Chinese couldn't get elsewhere if they tried. It's not likely we're talking about the Koreans giving the Chinese F-16s or AEGIS warships. I doubt they need worry about ticking off the US over this either.
I suspect the only goals here are flicking their nose at Japan and possibly economic. And if the Koreans fail to capitalize on the growing Chinese market they can pretty well hang it up anyway.
Taking the Chinese's money is even better than gettig guns from them. |

I was aware as much as the hundreds of US soldiers that train or who have trained before with both armies during annual training exercises.
It is just that either Korea or Japan that hasn't participated in one way, shape or form over the years in hope of not antagonizing someone. |

Can we expect to see less English ahgwons and more chinese institutes in the future?
koreans will always suck up to whoever they percieve is the strongest ally. They are cultural/political "w h o r e s" |
