I started a new job at a small school. Although I know a small new school is a red flag, both the former foreign teachers loved their job and bosses. I do too and don't want to fight with them, but I do want my health insurance. When I worked at my last school it was very cheap--30,000 won apiece for me and the school per month. My new boss doesn't know how to get it and thinks it's very expensive. I wouldn't even mind paying for it myself as I'm getting a decent salary, a very nice apartment and the bosses have helped both me and my boyfriend out a lot. But I do want it. Can anyone tell me where my boss should call to contact the National Health insurance? Or does it only apply to the larger school? How much does it cost now?
Thanks,
Margaret |

| Margaret, in your *gu*, you have a bohormgongdan - (sp.?). Ask your boss to go there and apply for it. It doesn't cost that much - I should think around 20,000 a month (if that.. but I really am not sure because I don't have to pay it). |

It's really simple for your boss.
All that needs be done is a call to the health insurance office for their address. Go there with your boss or at least with the school's ID number, your ARC and passport. Fill out the form(s). Pay up.
The current rate is W35,000 a month, I think.
You need to get on this. When my boss stalled, I ended up having to pay from the date of my visa, even though I hadn't been covered. I don't know if that is general policy, but it's what happened to me.
One way you might force the boss's hand is to go to the health insurance office and when they ask for the school's ID number, tell them to call the institute. Next time you see the boss, smile sweetly and say you were only trying to help out since he/she is so busy. |

If your health insurance was that cheap, it's because your school lied about you wage when they filed for it.
If you make less than maybe 1.5 (I forget the actual number) you qualify for a lower cost on insurance. If you are making 2.0, your health insurance actually costs over twice as much.
So it's probably going to cost more than 20,000 a month for your employer, unless they lie and turn in a false signed contract showing you make a much lower wage.
Cheating on this is common hagwon practice. |

| Thanks, folks. I'll give this info to my boss and go there myself if needed. Does Ya-ta Boy or anyone else have the phone number of the health insurance office? |

| I just had my teeth cleaned. It was terrifying but they're sparkly white now. Next question: Anyone know how I can get an EEG? (Neurological exam-I have some ferocious tremors.) |
