We had a job offer last night for a school in Changwon.

The pay is 1.8-1.9

The hours are:
Monday, Wednesday, Friday : 3pm to 9pm
Tuesday, Thursday : 4:30pm to 9pm

Plus 3 months worths of Saturdays : 3pm to 6pm

* The saturday work is included in normal pay, and isnt overtime.

Is this worth 1.8-1.9m?

What do you think?????

How is the three months of saturdays defined? does that mean you'll do 12 saturdays over the course of the year? or three months straight of saturdays at one time, then no more?

Is that worth it? depends. Is the school good? the other people? the area? the apartment? It depends on a lot of things. If you're only here to make money, probably not. but if you want to experience korea, it might be.

The contract details are average, nothing special. At least no split shifts, and as long as you work no more than 30 teaching hours at your pay level.

Do more research into the specifics. Talk to other foreign teachers who've experience at that hagwon. Politely demand the contact info as a necessity. Save yourself many possible headaches by finding out their track record and reputation... or just jump in with both feet and make the best of it, if you're so inclined.

Thanks guys for you thoughts...

I forgot to ad that they also said - "the contract will say 120hrs a month - but this is because its a contract used for all the franchises, at your school you will only do 130 classess of 40 min each which works out roughly as 90 hrs a month".

I dont think that i should sign a contract that says I have to do 120 hrs, even if they dont make me work it, simply because im worried that if i sign it, then they could make me work those hours...

Prob is a dodgy deal - although I have heard good things about Changwon, and its a couple job and we get a 2brm apt and 200,000 relocation bonus each.....

130 classes a month, over 21 working days (4, 5 day weeks and 1 saturday) averages out to 6.5 classes a day- probably closer to seven. That means seven classes a day, every day. Do enjoy.

6 x 21 = 126
130 / 21 = 6.2

It appears that it means six, and even then that's six fourty minute classes.

6 x 40 < 5 x 50+

You can probably do better. If you're a newbie you might have to swollow lower than 2.0 pay or working some saturdays, but having both blows horrifically, you can probably do better.

Not all jobs with saturday classes are bad, I've got 7 HOURS of Saturday classes every week and my job's great (or at least I think so).

Is it ECC in Changwon???

They have been pulling this lately as well, I've heard it is OK to work there but the director is an idiot.

Which hagwon is it???

PM me as i would probably know if the hagwon is any good or not.

I just got another email (i emailed and said it wasnt enough pay for the hours...and the reply is as follows)

"I'm sure it will be possible to negociate a
salary of 1.9 million won per month for you Smile I'm also sending you a sample
contract and the actual teaching hours is already set at 95 hours per month
in the contract (not the 120 hours I told you over the phone... my mistake),
but Angela told me that in reality you will be teaching 130 - forty minute
classes at ECC Changwon, but your salary is for 142 - forty minute classes.
It means that you're getting paid say 1.9 million won per month for teaching
142 - forty minute classes, but in reality the school only gives you 130
classes! And the 3 months teaching Saturday is also included in those 130 -
forty minute classes. "

"negotiate" a salary that's below market value? You could easily get a 2.0 mill job by checking the classified ads at www.pusanweb.com The average pay range is 1.8-2.0 mill so 1.9 mill requires NO negotiating.

There are many job opportunities that have the standard 30 hours per week, 120 hours per month maximum for 1.8-2.0.

Dishonest misleading logic: A used car salesman selling you a lemon!

They are trying to say they are paying you for 140 hours when 120 hours is BY FAR the standard. They want you to work ten hours overtime (maybe up to twenty sometime in the future) for 1.9 mill and to feel grateful about it.

I am a positive person. And I posted positive comments earlier but... stay away from that offer! Don't even try to "re-negotiate" the contract because in actual fact many will put anything on paper to get you (since there's such a high demand for teachers, low supply).

So will the school say 3 months from now: "We pay you to teach 142 classes but you only teach 130. Take a pay cut to 1.8 or come in two Saturdays."

Also, what's the deal on prep time?

It doesnt sound all that great to me. 2.0 mil is pretty much standard. Never agree to 120 hours a month it gives them license to rip you off.

I would not agree to a contract with more than 5 classes a day (5 days a week)

Keep looking you can do better!
