The question is interesting?

"How Much Did Foreigners Earn in Korea?"

Should it be something else?

"How Much Did Foreign Investors Earn in Korea?"

The original question is fine as it stands. It can however be read a couple ways & one of them happens to play into RR's fixation on comparing wages.

schwa,

The original question is fine. The article attempted to answer that question.

Which one is more important to you:
1. How much foreign investors earn in Korea?
2. How much foreigners earn teaching and working in Korea?

Foreign teachers have a lot of money, motivation, and time to invest in Korea, right?
Foreign teachers are encouraged to invest in Korea. It is a part of the benefits package, right?

These are the bonus questions.

What? You are asking us what your opinion is? How should we know which is more important to you? Do you think Foreign teachers have a lot of money, motivation, and time to invest in Korea? Do you think Foreign teachers are encouraged to invest in Korea.? Do you think It is a part of the benefits package? How much do you think qualified foreigners earn compared to similarly qualified Koreans in similar jobs? Do you expect us to believe that you don't have any opinions?

So, you refuse to state your opinion? If you won't answer anybody else's questions, why should anybody else answer you? How much do you think qualified foreigners earn compared to similarly qualified Koreans in similar jobs? What's your opinion? No opinion?

"The number of non-regular workers was estimated at 7.13 million at the end of last year, accounting for 49 percent of the nation's total workers. Their wages usually stand at about 60 percent of what regular workers make. They can also be easily dismissed, as most of them are short-term employees." http://times.hankooki.com/lpage/nation/200504/kt2005040117185311990.htm

Koreans in similar jobs to foreigners would be the non-regular workers, wouldn't they? Is that the comparison you want to make?

I think the question is a question, not a hidden opinion per se.
The subtext of the article, of course, is how terrible it is that foreigners made a lot of money on the Korean stock market. Just like a foreigner getting tenure at a Korean university (unacceptable!), it galls the jingoistic readership of this paper.

As for foreign teacher earnings, I don't think it will extend into the billions, but I can ballpark it:
~6000 legal E2s in the country:
~5000 illegal teacher (according to the guy who processed my foreign resident card; a rough estimate, say):
11,000 teachers
2 million won per month on average?
That's 22 billion WON or about 22 million dollars per month, about a quarter of a billion USD per year.

So while we are screwing them out of that much, in their eyes, it's a lot less than those investors screwed them for.

RR did you check out Cho Se Hyon in Saturday's (hm--Monday's?) Korea Herald or Kim Seong Kon in today's?

jaykimf,

Thank you for the article and link. However, the information is too broad.

Are all foreign employees short term workers? Is that a good or appropriate category for foreigners that work for several years at the same place? Foreigners do not seem to have any chance to improve their employment status.

Intrepid,

I would like more detailed facts and figures.
Thank you for the effort.

I will check on the articles you recommend.

The guy I met on the Subway from Nigeria makes about 800,000 won or so per month~ if he even gets paid. Have you calculated that into your figures at all?

Most foreign employees are non-regular employees. Most foreign English teachers have one year visas and one year contracts. That means they are temporary workers employed for a specific contracted period and are not regular employees. Koreans who work under a series of one year contracts are also considered temporary non-regular workers. Many Koreans do not seem to have a chance to improve their employment status. Have you looked into getting Korean citizenship?

Are you going to answer my question? How much do you think qualified foreigners earn compared to similarly qualified Koreans in similar jobs? What's your opinion?
