I was ashamed to find that many quotes we think came from the "west" actually came from Korea. e.g:
History tells us that Patrick Henry said "give me liberty or give me death" in 1775
But.........
It was actually first coined by Kim Oh Choon in 1523 who told his Chinese captors after being being fed rice "give me kimchi or give me death". He was unfortunately killed and now is a legend in Korean history.
Do you know the famous Irish proverb : "a bird in the hand is worth two in the bush" ?
Well it actually first came from the Kim Dynasty in 800bc Korea when it was "a dog by the tail is worth two on the mountain".
Have you ever heard the proverb"
Never swap horses crossing a stream.
It was actually first quoted in 152 A.D by a group of Korean archers who said "never swap soju crossing a stream".
THe horror! |

There is a famous story about another saying.
According to my sources, the monk Oh oh-oh in the mid 1400's was really perturbed that King Sejong had single-handedly come up with an alphabet, making his years of struggling with Chinese characters obsolete. He sat down in front of the palace, pulled out a big knife and shouted, "The sword is mightier than the pen!" (which didn't make it into the Book of Famous Quotes). After whacking off the end of his finger, he looked at the blood spouting and said those immortal words, "Blood really is thicker than water". |
