| i guess it depends....the apple shuffle 1 gig will cost you less then either the samsung or iriver. It lacks a screen, but I've kinda decided screens are virtually useless on those little buggers. I just bought a 4 gig mini for 230,000 and it's the best electronics purchase I've ever made. |

Try a search on this board. There was a lot of conversation regarding the benefits of various MP3 players. I sided with Iriver because I wanted an FM radio (not much good for you in Korea).
Does the Ipod play wma files? That's another thing to consider if you are going to do legal downloads.
BTW, anybody read about the "hack" for NTG (napster to go)? I use the word "hack" loosely.
Too much work in my opinion, so I'm just going to stick to legal downloads. |

Shuffle has no lcd display screen. That would drive me nutty.
iRiver has great sound. However, the control set is based around this very fragile little spring loaded joy stick. Mine broke after 3 months of hustle and bustle. Ugg.
Buy an mp3 player that works off of rechargable AA or AAA batteries. They're cheap to replace when they don't hold a charge. Built in batteries aren't at all cheap to replace. |

The shuffle.... load it up with a pile of songs they like and hear them randomly.
I couldn't deal with that. I listen to music for many reasons, and I like to choose my music carefully....each song. The shuffle is like a radio station that takes your requests only. The song you really want to hear is coming.....sometime. Yes, and no dispaly?!? What is that all about besides saving costs...
The YEPP is a good product. I have a few friends who have them as well as a great number of students, and they seem to be rigorous and reliable. The things I have seen some students do with them and they still keep working.... |

Actually, the Shuffle randomly downloads songs from the computer's music library as most people will have many more songs in their library than space in their Shuffle. So before you go out the door, you plug it in for a minute, the software chooses a random selection of songs off the computer, and fills the Shuffle up.
It's a shuffle of music off the computer, not just songs you've copied over and play on random.
Not a bad idea. |

| it's a cool feature, but shouldn't be the only available option. IF that thing was called, say, the Sony Shuffle- no-one would touch it. |

| Well, I finally saw an Apple Shuffle last week (you know how MP3 players are used to make a fashion statement by Korean guys). Well, it was rather big , and quite ugly. Kind of looked like a reject from the Star Trek TV series' props department. |

Is that all it does???
Thank-you for saving me from buying one!
Who the heck wants to buy an .mp3 player that won't let you choose the order of your own songs (except Gord)? Surely it allows you to play them in an order you upload them in? |

| You can play in order or shuffle, screens are over rated unless you have a ton of music, in which case an iPod would be the way to go. |

It's not for everyone. It's for people who want a random selection of songs to listen to when they go out the door. It has not been marketed as being anything else.

I've already got something that holds everything I would want to listen to. A Sony Network Walkman. 20GB. Runs for 30 hours. Size of an iPod Mini.
But then it also cost me 435,000 Won.

Well, yes. But the intent is that you plug it in 30 seconds before you leave, the computer uploads a gig of random songs from your library (entire or preferred songs), and off you go.
If you want something else with more features that cost more, then buy something else with more features that cost more. I'm thinking about buy a Sony remote control that costs $180 but includes everything from macro commands, touch screen, to duplication of any IR frequency broadcast. It is the god of remote controls and does everything I need a remote control to do given the amount of electronic projects I have on the go in my apartment, but that doesn't mean I'm going to start complaining about how other people spend $10 to buy a replacement remote which does very little and doesn't even include an LCD screen. |

Not to mention the fact that you must use Sony's Sonic Burner software, and it transfers files via USB only (no line-in; read: no recording on the fly). On the other hand, at least Sony finally put a goddam backlight on one of their machines. |
