A pretty drastic move from immigration. Seems that, in 5 months, teaching visas will only be granted to foreigners with a minimum BEd. Read it all here:

LOL RR.

I really doubt that they can impose such a measure - they will have a serious shortage of teachers...

Sadly. It would be nice to see.

A shortage at the current wages and conditions which they're used to paying, yes. But a shortage of qualified teachers might result in wages and benefits increasing to a point where qualified teachers would consider Korea over Jubail and Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, which are places where many well-qualified ESL'ites go now.

I figure the typical salary of 2,000,000w is only a million won short. Add in some quality vacation time, decent apartments, interest free car loans and flights back home every year, and knock off 10 hours a week of teaching time from the typical load, and watch the talent apply.

How many people with education degrees who have done practicums at North American / UK / Australian schools would put up with the shit at hogwans when they could teach at an international school or get a job in a remote part of Canada that is offering desperation-level wages?

Many, I believe, though if you increase the wages and benefits and drastically reduce the hours, as I said in my post, it would look less like a hogwon as we know and love it.

Mosey on over to the "Middle East" board and discover a whole higher level of *beep* that qualified teachers readily put up with.

Thailand, China and Taiwan. Until they decide they've had enough of it and go through the same conversion.
