Just saw on cnn, a large fire has destroyed acres of houses and forest, including an ancient buhdist temple. it was looking to be out yesterday, but flared up again today as the winds picked up. hope no-one was killed, or lives there and lost all there stuff.

Theres a thread going on this here (Yangyang with a Y btw & its a county in Gangwondo):

Its just a dozen km from Sokcho -- a popular spot that will be missed.

As far as I've heard no one was killed. One teacher at my school here lost her house & another is absent today after defending hers (successfully) all night.

Forests the world over are drying out from climate change. in addition, there are no longer the animals present to naturally "manage" a forest- ie deer/rabbits etc all help to crop the undergrowth and prevent masses of dead, dry vegetation building up and making fuel for fires.
Not to mention the many day trippers running around in the woods dropping their cigarette butts.
