Okay boys, get over the cute picture at the top and scroll down a bit.
http://weblog.greenpeace.org/koreawhales/
It's good reading, and I'm surprised that no-one seems to have posted about this already. Maybe they have, but after a search I couldn't find anything.
This is supposed to have been in mainstream media around Corea a bit recently, though I'd guess they'd keep it out of the English language papers. But is no-one else here into Greenpeace stuff? Has no-one else seen 'Whale Rider'...?
I have been served whale meat 'service' in a fancy fish restaurant before, and unless they were trying to 'bait' me for a rise, I took it as a kindness so didn't object...
but really, it seems to me the insistance to the point of fixation on eating whale-meat is a Japanese habit, and in terms of international scientific responsibility and political culture it would be a good way for Korea to distance itself from the traditional (Tokdo et al) enemy in terms of bad fishing habits etcetera.
Furthermore, if you are familiar with the thread about the guy who died recently in Ulsan... anyone know if he was involved in demonstration against this whole proposed factory thing? |

Bizarrely, a group of Ulsan council members left the ship after the ceremony and went for a "delicious" whale meat lunch in town, taking some press with them. |
Is it possible the council members totally misconstrued the whole Greenpeace message, heard the key word 'Whale' only, and decided a good thing to do would be have whale meat for lunch!! Middle-aged men in Ulsan are not known for their grasp of English or worldly enviromental issues.
If this is not the case I can only assume that they were not in total support of the Greenpeace message!!! |
