Ok, I didn't, but my friend did...seriously.

So, in an act of stupidity she changed her password (to her user-status on WinXP) and forgot to write it down. Now she can't log in to her main 'account.'

How might she gain access (bypass) the password hurdle? I had one of my students do it for me ages ago, so I know it's possible...but forgot how he did it.

Danke danke fer yis help.

Ryst

when I forgot my password on Win2000 (actually I could swear someone hacked in and changed it, possibly aliens)- one of the guys in the office took my C: out of the case, hooked it up to his own PC as a slave hard drive, and deleted some files called xxx.SAM which may or may not have been
C:\windows\system32\drivers\etc\lmhosts.sam

However I think XP is a bit more secure, and you might need something like this site

oh wait, your friend isn't the Administrator on that machine? Then surely you just need an admin to come in and reset the password using Start->Settings->Users and Passwords ?

Unfortunately, she is the admin...and forgot her admin password.

Thanks for the links so far...I'll play with them.

Anybody else?

Can you say "SCREWED"?

If she actually knew her password, she would be able to use a diskette which can be made in the accounts section of th control panel to reset the password. Since she obviously didn't do that, this option is out. Reformatting would also be out since it will ask her the password to start the formatting process.

She might be able to get into the computer with alternate logon credentials which are available through the "secondary logon" service. I'm not sure how to do this but, perhaps someone else knows. However, the bottom line is that it is going to be a real pisser to reset the password to nil again.

If I were her, I would seriously be trying everything and anything possible that she might have used as a password.

So you're saying if she could remember her password, there'd be no problem because she could just reset her password? Handy!

I gather the drift might be that if she had known her password before she forgot it, she might have had the foresight to make the disk concerned beforehand. She certainly will from now on I guess... Wink

This is the FINAL SOLUTION..... (no, not Doctor assisted suicide)

http://home.eunet.no/~pnordahl/ntpasswd/

you'll need a floppy disk or blank CD and burner

...or hypnotherapy is terrific at recovering long forgotten memories and passwords.

Well, with it in a text file on a floppy, it can be read by anyone who comes across it. I believe that Jaz was referring to a diskette which the system formats so that simply inserting it during boot will reset the password and the disk itself is not a liability if someone comes across it.

And don't for a minute think of suggesting that she save her password using a Word doc that has a user password attached to it to prevent someone opening it and finding out... Rolling Eyes
