A form came across my desk this morning. Apparently public employees are getting some money from the government! Any public worker earning less than 36 million is getting some kind of oil-price rebate bonus equalization something-or-other. (It's around 240,000 for me. Good news for public school teachers; let's count those chickens when they hatch.) The sticking point is I need to stamp it with my dojang, which I don't have! My co-teacher says my signature is not enough, so I guess I'm going to have to get a 5000 won stamp to collect my 240 grand.

Any of you old-timers/long-termers have a dojang? Have you needed it for any official documents where a signature wouldn't suffice? Which name did you put on it?

They used those in banking too, but accepted me signing my initials when opening an account. Wow, some free money is coming our way? I guess you can go to a stationary supplies shop to get a dojang stamp? Cool.

I have one- I went to a shop in Insa-dong and got one made, traditional style: big Chinese stone, hanja characters written from right to left and top to bottom. I've never been in a situation where my signature wasn't good enough, but I use it at the bank for fun.

Are you sure that even foreign teachers are included in this perk? There might be a reason they require a dojang rather than a signature--they know that most foreigners don't typically have one while almost all working Koreans do. Seems strange that a normal sig won't do it. Standard deterrent measure perhaps?

The old man who carved mine with my English full name just about toppled over with stress from carving it. He said he'd never had such a difficult job before! My first name is 5 letters, middle name is 4 letters and family name was 7 letters and he carved it by hand, in English on a dojang around the size of a dime in diameter! A great souvenir!
Whenever my husband doesn't have his with him(most of the time, he's too American and always forgets it!) they have him dip his finger in the red ink and stamp it with a fingerprint. Maybe you can do that?

I jsut have to get a "certificate" from my bank. they told meit would be about 100,000 the first month, and 70,000 the next, but they didn't know about more...free money....cool.

Foreign workers are included in this program. Check the form and you will see that your school's finance officer is to enter code "9" for "foreigner."

Also, you do not need a dojang/stamp. All you have to do is sign the form.

My Gu office told me my registered ingam dojang had to be in English. The guy at the only shop near the Gu office couldn't speak and could barely read & write English. I use it for grade reports and drop forms. I've never gotten around to adding it to my bank accounts...they all have just my signature.

The 유가환급금 신청 의뢰서 form.

Foreigners (living and working in Korea) are eligible for a tax refund authorized by President Lee Myung-bak. It is to offset the rising costs associated with the price of oil, and the 240,000 won refund is available for taxpayers who earn between 24 and 36 million won per year.

The form is available in Korean, and has most likely be distributed at your school. Its has to be lodged by October 20th

However -

As for the refund, the person who is eligible for the refund must have paid insurance evey month of their employment in Korea (including unemployment insurance, health insurance, industrial insurance and pension).

So if you haven't been paying all of that - you are not eligible for the refund.
