Short Height, Light Weight No Cause for Job Rejection
Persons of short height, low weight and with tattoos, too, may become the nation's policemen, fire fighters, jailers, juvenile protectors and railroad security guards in the future. The National Human Rights Commission of Korea on Tuesday ruled it as an "infringement on the right of equality by physical conditions" to restrict height and weight in recruiting the above-cited five kinds of public servants. "If physical abilities above certain levels are needed in performing the duties of the five jobs, rational physical tests commensurate with the nature of the duties must be conducted," said the commission.

"My height was 166.8 cm in the first trial and 167 cm in the second. But I was omitted on grounds that my height is inconsistent," K complained in his petition. Under the current rules, a policeman must be 167 cm tall or more.
