I've got a trojan on my computer. When AVG first discovered it, it said that it is vgs psyme virus. It couldn't delete it so it sends it to the "virus vault." Whatever that is. Anyhow. Even after I ran it, I'm still getting my desktop with this stupid ad.

So I cleaned out the Temp files. Still no luck. Ran online House Call. Can't find it. Ran Adaware and Spybot. They can't find it. The desktop theme comes from a file in Windows/web called desktop.html. So I deleted that.

But everytime I load the computer it comes back up again.

What do I do?

Look in the regsitry...back it up before you change anything.

HKEY-LOCAL_MACHINE_SOFTWARE_MICROSOFT_WINDOWS_CURRENT VERSION_RUN for any entries that look suspect...that look like the virus. Before you start deleting entries, again....BACK IT UP! (look for back up ENTIRE registry)

Check anything you don't recognize with a quick "Google" to identify it before deletion.

What's happening is that the file is gone, but it's in the registry to run on each boot. Clear the registry and you clear the problem.

Also in HKEY_CURRENT_USER_, etc...(same as above)

Be careful in here...it's brain surgery for Windows.

You could get a program like "Registry mechanic"...maybe has a trial period before you must buy it. It will find these rogue entries for you and delete them safely.

I really like a program called Wintasks Pro- it shows you everything that's running on your PC, then if there's something you don't like the look of you can just stop it running, and set up a block to not let it run in the future.

Works for me with some stuff the virus/adware checkers miss.

turn off system restore first.
restart and boot into safe mode.
run AVG and your spyware program
go back to normal mode and turn on system restore.

Always worked for me, especially when I had junk that just kept coming back right after running AVG and spyware stuff.

Problem solved. With my still Korean operating system and my complete and utter inability to know what to do, outside of blindly pushing buttons, I called one of those PC fix-it guys.

I killed two birds with one stone. Got the virus fixed and now my computer speaks English.

Thanks for all your help.

I used avg for a while and found it to suck, bigtime. I've installed Avast antivirus. It is free and 100% effective. And its Czech... how cool is that? http://www.avast.com/

if you use a bootleg copy of windows, you may not be able to use the microsoft spyware, so ad-aware works well.
