|
|
Snagged this off the web - anyone been? Seems like a good choice for a future get-together. (not Dec 11th; we have a place set for that)
G.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
All you can eat buffets - an ingenious way of tempting the masses to commit a deadly sin, or an inexpensive night out where guilt-free over indulgence is par for the course?
If you ask Tim Bae, owner of the Platinum Micro Brewery chain, buffets have nothing to do with gluttony and spending an eternity in hell being force-fed rats, toads and snakes; they're about enjoying an abundance of food washed down with copious amounts of micro brewed beer at an unbeatable price.
Customers pile their plates at Platinum Gangnam.
"This is the best buffet in Korea," grinned Bae as he surveyed the packed second floor dining room of Platinum Gangnam. "Look around, everyone's smiling and enjoying themselves, there's no guilt here."
And at 14,600 won (plus VAT), what would have to be the busiest buffet in town is packing them in night after night as diners travel from around Seoul to enjoy 30 different kinds of food and seven micro brewed beers in surrounds more befitting a Parisian or Madrilene nightclub.
David Peterson, 31, a portly Canadian who traveled from Hagye-dong to feast, is making his fifth trip to the buffet for the evening and believes that Platinum offers the best dining "bang for your buck" in Korea.
"I plan on making this a regular weekend haunt," he said while carefully positioning another piece of sushi atop a plate of food that bore a remarkable resemblance to the Eiffel Tower.
Balancing his plate in one hand and clutching two glasses of beer in another, Peterson explained the secret of his food piling strategy.
"You start with the meats, that's the foundation, and then add rice, a little salad, pasta and then finish it off with sushi or gimbab," he smiled. "Don't worry there'll be no spillage, I'm an expert plate mountaineer."
Sally White, 26, a New Zealander, agreed with Peterson that the buffet was "great value for money" but cited beer as the number one reason for visiting Platinum.
"I love beer," the blonde English teacher said in between long sips from a glass of "Bock" lager. "I used to drink micro brew back home and this reminds me of some of the best stuff. All of their beer tastes great, and to drink as much as you want for under 20,000 won, it's pretty awesome in my books."
Following the success of "Bock," a sweet-tasting German style beer boasting 8.1 percent alcohol, Bae is preparing to unleash "Morphine" - Korea's strongest domestically brewed beer upon his Gangnam patrons in two weeks time.
Packing an 8.4 percent alcohol punch, Bae said that the Belgian style blonde ale is unlike other high alcohol beers. "You can't taste the alcohol, that's the secret of a super strength beer," he said. "It's also the reason why we call it 'Morphine.' It sneaks up on you and leaves you feeling warm all over."
Seo Jung-ho, the brew master responsible for "Morphine," is a man who stands by his handiwork, freely admitting that he likes getting drunk on the powerful tipple. In fact, he is so confident in the quality of his product that he guarantees "no hangovers" - fantastic news for those saddling up for a mid-week buffet ride.
Platinum Micro Brewery's buffet runs from 6 p.m. to 8:30 p.m., Monday to Saturday. Reservations are strongly recommended, with the spectre of waiting time in the downstairs bar facing those who drop in without calling. To get there, take Subway Line No.2 to Gangnam Station, Exit No. 8. For more information, call (02) 2052-0022 |
Ok, I'll be there like flies on shit. By the way, does anyone know how much this place appears to be different than Carne Station? I haven't been to either. |
Well done, David.
Wasn't there a thread somewhere about how Koreans are slimmer than Westerners? |
And file for bankrupcy in the morning.
I think you misunderstood the tone of my post.
Ol' David might want to consider not being such a greedy pig, before he has a coronary on the way back for Eiffel Tower plate number 7. |
This is almost opposite my office and is owned by a chum of my brother-in-law.
I have been there several times and recommend it without reservation. There are even potatoes in the buffet selection: a definite plus for me.
Last time I went, Friday 19 November, it was really busy, perhaps 150 people. The ambience is a bit sterile but it offers all that it says it does.
Most important of course is the beer. There is a good selection and I usually choose the stout (no guesses why) which is along the lines of a Guinness, but without the creamy smoothness. Otherwise, I drink the Platinum, an excellent beer by any standards. |
they have a place similar to this in Daegu at the Arianna Hotel.
The Microbrewery has 3 different beers. Korean piss yellow, tan and stout without the stout taste.
The buffet is good too.
For the price it's worth it and after a couple of the beers you just realize, yeah you're drinking some Korean beer but the more you drink the cheaper it is so it's fun to go sometimes... |
*Reads article*
*Looks down and shakes head*
*Braces for onslaught from Miguks/Kiwis/Aussies and whoever else loves to bash Canadians relentlessly over the "fat" thang... Damn....*
Oh well... I guess if one's happy being the Sir Edmund Hillary of plate mountaineering, that's the only important thing... Just don't go complaining about not getting any action later!
... Oh yeah, and this post may sound funny coming from me- the guy who was looking for Huge Awesome Burgers a couple weeks ago. But so what? |
Yeah, maybe cuz there's enough Koreans and foreigners on this site already saying it! Even the damn newspaper!
I'm gonna be looking in a mirror and calling myself portly in a couple more years if I keep up my current pace... My early twenties were kind to me; my late twenties are punishment for a decade of nourishment by steak, burgers, pizza pops, and beer.
All I know is that Carne station does grill-your-own at your table, but more importantly has brandy bottles on the the liquor dispenser rack.
(I'm not usually a lush, but when it's all you can drink brandy, do you really care what's on the menu?) |
I bet he doesn't! He's my new hero!
Why would you go to an 'all you can eat' and then put a bit of salad and skinless chicken on your plate?
David has got it right! Pile it on. Health concerns are not in question here. |
