Yesterday morning I received the following e-mail from the "Program Director" of the hogwon at which I was supposed to begin working at the beginning of May. The e-mail came 9 days before I was to move out of my apartment in Boston...
Quote: |
I apologize for causing you all this distress... We were quite anxious to have you as a part of our staff yet we seem as though you are asking for too much... I am sorry to say that we cannot hire you for our academy for a variety of reasons..
1. We had a contract that stated you leave from Boston one way ticket...
2. 2.3 million won is a lot of money, yet we offered it to you without any hesitation but now we feel like you wish for more than what we agreed for...
3. and most important, we actually are not in need of a new teacher, since we don't have many students...
4. I got everything for you that you wanted... I do like the fact that you are blaming me for having sent Fed-ex twice... |
Actually, the contract I signed said I was entitled to a round-trip ticket from the "closest airport." I originally said a one-way would be fine because I had no intention of flying back to Boston. I thought I was being nice. When he kept pushing back my arrival date, I told him I would have to stay with my parents in another state until I knew the exact flight date, and in that case would want a round-trip after all, which is what my contract entitles me to. He knew I had to leave my apt. by April 30.
Regarding the salary, I have an MA in Linguistics and initially turned down his offer for 2.2, knowing I could do better. He then offered 2.3 and I accepted. I never asked for a sip won more.
Apparently, he got angry when I asked if I could be reimbursed for the second $40 Fed-ex I sent them, which I had to send because of an error on his part, and when I politely asked him not to call my house at 3:00 a.m.
One more thing: He also said I'd be teaching high school and university age students. Come to find out most of their 10 students are elementary students, and they are handing out flyers at elementary schools in their free time.
This school just opened last month and is located in Buchon just outside of Seoul. If you want more information about this school, or you think you may have been contacted by their Program Director, feel free to send me a private message and I will give you more info. |

Sucks that you had a job lined up at that seems to have renegged at the 11th hour... however, it could be a blessing in disguise... they sound quite horrendous! If you continute your search for a position as an English Teacher (with your quals you should land a great job!) I wish you the best of luck as often that's what's it takes to land a decent job. |

Thanks Waterbaby. Luckily, another school whose offer I turned down because of the Buchon offer still wants me. They are offering 2.6, and the school is well-established. Unfortunately, their May 1 position has now been filled, so I have to sit around at my parents' house in Florida (I know, could be worse) until the end of May. Meanwhile, my parents will try to wear me down and get me to take an ESL position at a local high school -- they want me to stay. Anyhow, you're right, it's a blessing in disguise. The 25-year-old Korean American "Program Director" was going to be my boss. After I responded to his e-mail, he wrote me back an even nastier one, written mostly in all caps (yelling at me). When I explained that my contract entitled me to a round-trip ticket, he responded, and I quote, "I don't really care what the contract says!!!!"
Whew... close one! |

For those who may in some way come into contact with this school, please list the name of the director (as some change) and the school's name.
Cheers and good luck on finding employment that behooves you,
Ryst |

The name of the school is "Milton Prep School," and the program director goes by the name of "AJ" (or Ajae). I believe the owner's name is Mr. Kim. The school still has not returned my documents to me, even though they said they sent them about a month ago. Sorry for the late reply. |
