They are a waste of time. If I had an applicant that used a template, I would toss their resume in the garbage and many companies, corporations, and government agencies do the same. However, this is Korea we are talking about where the content isn't so much an issue as long as it looks good, shows your education, and has a picture of your handsome/pretty face on it.

I agree with Jaz77 - though not quite as strongly.

A resume should set you apart from the crowd and - using a template - seems to just help you blend into the big pile of paper on the desk.

Saw a resume recently where the lady had used the left margin - widened a bit of course - to place excerpts of her references. And very nicely done!

There are also very easy to use resume templates built right in to MS word. Click on "file" then "new" and the templates are there.

A resume for applying to a job in Korea isn't that important and doesn't have to be fancy. Just don't make any obvious grammar or spelling mistakes.

What Korean hackwon bosses are most interested in is your picture.

If you're applying for an ESL\EFL teaching job in Korea, put most of your effort into your application photo. That's what will make or break the job offer. Try to get a picture with you smiling and looking laid back. One with you and some kiddies would be a plus also.
