Does anyone know how long a car air conditioner usually lasts before the gas has to be replaced? My car is a year 2000 minivan with 120 000 km on it. I'm not sure if I should get it done or not. It works, but I don't think it works quite as well as it should. Is five years normal or am I just imagining that the A/C doesn't work quite as well as it used to? Would anyone happen to know how much it usualy costs to get the A/C gas replaced?

A/C recharge can vary, but if it's not working well, you might want to have a recharge done. Not sure what they charge these days.

You're probably not imagining it. I'm in the same situation this week with my Mazda. If the gas is low/empty, it likely means there's a leak. Replacing the gas is a short-term solution, but don't be surprised if in a few weeks it turns warm again. Eventually they'll need to hunt down the leak and repair/replace things.

I'm not sure how much they charge in Korea for the gas, but it was about $20 where I'm at.

I'm going to get an oil change soon, and will get the a/c charged up too...

My car is a '93 and the a/c barely works.

Seriously? *gag* Then I won't complain about what I paid two weeks ago, which was roughly 1/3 the cost.

You should recharge your aircon every 2-3 years. Makes a huge difference if you keep up with it.

And remember:

In Korea, they just open the valve and let that freon go! No "freon catchers" here folks....it just rides straight up and eats that pesky atmosphere.

It's a 1997 Mazda 323 - identical to the Madza Protege in North America.

It's a good car. Not great. But it seems to be holding up in constant tropical heat at 6000+km/month.

I wouldn't have minded a Korean car but I live in a country that holds an unjustified prejudice against Hyundais and Kias, and that sinks resale prices. My Mazda econobox has a much better resale value here than a well-maintained, fully loaded Sonata of the same vintage.
