|
I had a 2nd computer through another lan card in the 1st computer connect to the internet, but as I posted in another thread, I suddenly couldn't connect anymore. The moment before the 2nd computer failed in it's connection I had several things happen all at the same time :
1. Started using some spyware and tweaking programs(I first thought I deleted a important componant, but realized I hadn't because it still doesn't work after a clean reinstall).
2. Had a power surge problem that rebooted the computer with the message, "Overclocking failed."
3. My Hanafos cable suddenly stopped and a service man tinkered with the cable line outside and logged into the Hanafos site and entered a few things and left with my 1st computer running.
So, after having everything work with a router, I begin to wonder if the service man saw I had two computers and made it impossible to share the modem. Anybody able to shed some light? |

Get a hub.
I bought a 4 port, wireless hub; 4 ports for lan line, and antenna for wireless connection. I have my desktop hooked up through one hub, and when I bring my laptop I like to surf without wires. I can say that I've never had a problem. |

I already got a router, but like it I said what once worked without a router now doesn't after the service guy paid a visit, or it has to do with something else. |

A wireless hub would do the same thing as a router.
Yeah, I'd say the guy did something to block the connection sharing. Why don't you reconfigure your router to allow both IPs again?
Also, are you sure that he left you with the same setup? Maybe he disconnected your setup from connecting through the WAN port of your router. |

I think people are reading my post way too fast to understand my setups past and present:
1. Before the service guy came, I used to use the first computer as the gateway for the second computer with a second lan card and this all worked.
2. Suddenly my internet failed and thus the requirement of the service guy to make a house call.
3. After he left the original setup didn't work, so I pulled out my router and bam, two computers with internet.
Just asking and as jazblanc77 hinted at, could the service guy made some sort of fine adjustment to disallow internet sharing through a 1st computer gateway and how did he do that? Are internet companies fickle about one modem with two computers connections? What are internet companies policies toward two computers sharing one modem? Just would like to know. |

| I think that their policy would lean towards the idea that it is more profitable to require a customer to lease two connections from them rather than just one. |

The megapass guy came to our office to change the DSL connection from a the regular TCP over the wire kind to the PPPoE kind where the internet shows up as a separate connection. He disabled Internet Connection Sharing and all the port forwards I had set up to get bit torrent working in the teacher's lounge. Of course ten seconds after he left I had it shared again. Then a couple months later he was back to switch out the modem for some reason. Once again he also took the opportunity to unshare internet connection. Once again I was inconvenienced for a few seconds.
I think they're just checking the boxes. They don't seem to be giving us any heat about the sharing. |

Perhaps you could shed light on where to find those boxes so that they may be unchecked again. |
