Why are so many people on this board angry at other posters?

They are angry at peoples baby photos. They get angry at Koreans for all sorts of thngs. They get angry when they read other peoples rants and raves.

Who cares?

My spelling is bad. I admit it. My typing is bad. I admit it. I do not teach typing. When I write a paper (except on daves) I use a dictionary, and "spell check".

I was so worried about going to Osaka because I am so bad at directions, that I posted here and people told me not to worry. (that was nice) Then when I came back I wrote about my trip. I was tired. I did not use paragraphs. I was just typing.

People wrote and said I was an idiot. People did not see how I could teach cause I was just going on and on. Sue me. I was tire. Did I deserve so many crappy responses? Thank goodnes for a few people who said leave me alone.

I am a great teacher. I never came to work drunk, like some people I know. I do the best I can, plus more. (on most days) I love what I do, and tht is more then Ican say about others. If I leave Korea today I can get a job in any state within a week.

This is Dave's, for crying out loud. Not a science journal.

So what if people do not type well? So what if people post their baibes? Who cares? THe pictures they post have nothing to do with what they type.

The forum is souupsed to be here for us to help eachother; to share ideas, to ask for help.

Why on earth do people bother with bashing other posts?

Give me a break.

I think a lot of Westerners are naturally critical....and being in Korea, they cannot express criticisms as much, for it will not be well received generally. We are always biting our tongues, and holding in our thoughts and opinions so as not to offend Koreans. Perhaps they are displacing feelings that they cannot express anywhere else living in Korea.

On Dave's, people are communicating with other foreigners and feel that being critical is fair game. Being critical is also facilitated by the anonymity this board provides...as people on this board rarely meet each other, they feel more compelled to speak their minds or attack.

I think it's important to try not to take these comments to heart.....if you know that you are a good teacher, then that's all that you need to know, and if you know it, that's all that really matters!

Don't worry. The good Captain Kirk, well known as one of the best writers on this board, never uses paragraphs!! It makes people concentrate more on what you're writing as they have to read slowly to avoid losing their place (my theory).

What ESL teachers hate, from least to most:

6. All Koreans
5. Korean students
4. Korean teachers
3. Korean males
2. Their hagwon director
1. Every other ESL teacher, save for when he's buying the beer

Besides being informative and endlessly entertaining, this boad also preforms a vital psychological function.

It provides a place for foreigners to come and vent about the many problems of living and working in Korea.

That's much better than putting it all away in a small ball, until the day you finally explode at a little kid who screams PUCK YOU or some racist ajossi.

Second that!!! A vent for emotions sometimes more than anything. As one person said. You really can't say anything negative or even something construed negative to many koreans without being verbally reprimanded. So I guess people come here to vent.

I think that venting and attacking another poster are two different things.

The OP was attacked about her typing and spelling, when she reported on her trip to Japan. In my opinion the attack was totally uncalled for.

Maybe we can all try to be a little kinder to each other on this forum.

You want to vent.....................GREAT

You want to attack another poster about things like typing and spelling.........................go stand in the closet and do some counting Shocked

Sometimes I wonder if the deliberate misunderstandings and cynical sort of sniping that goes on isn't just people forgetting that this board is made up of people. That it's them thinking it's an anonymous sniping/shooting gallery for venting problems with Korea upon other posters. Thinking they own the place, correcting grammar and so on. It's like, 'hey, look at me, I'm pissing on someone. Aren't I great?'.

Cowardly bollocks. Dogs are treated better than the odd poster sometimes.

I think you must ask yourself, "why do I post here?" I think most of the people post because they believe they have something valuable to add to the discussion. If you're writing something that you would like people to take seriously, the onus is upon you to write in a manner that can be understood. I can appreciate the need to get on Dave's and post a vent about your lousy day. Or to share your glorious day, for that matter. But if it's written so poorly that nobody will bother to read it, what's the point? If you don't care if anybody reads it, or if you're just getting your frustrations out pounding on a keyboard for a while, perhaps you'd be better off with a blog rather than posting messages on a discussion board.

Further, if people want to have a discussion about avatars, what's wrong with that? This is a discussion board, after all. There seems to be a little hypocrisy in saying that you should be able to post anything you like, in any manner you like, while wanting to prohibit other discussions you find distasteful.

Moving on, nobody expects posts to be perfect. There's no need to have a team of proofreaders handy to make sure your spelling and grammar are perfect, as long as we're able to understand each other. I think this should be the goal people should aim for: to communicate one's ideas effectively.

I hope you don't take my post here as a personal attack, 'cuz that's surely not my intent. I'm sure that you are a dedicated, responsible teacher and I don't mean to indicate otherwise. I feel bad about my role in your Osaka thread, especially the silly mud-slinging I got into, as it certainly contributed to that thread's degeneration. I think what everybody needs to remember on these boards is that if you disagree with a post, it's okay to criticize the content, but there's no need to attack the poster personally. That's what I'll try to do, anyway.

Ditto on the spelling and grammar mongers. Are we writing for graduate professors? Hell no.
I think the people who nitpick your grammar and spelling are the people who felt like they "lost" the argument or don't have anything substantial to say. They have nothing left...yet feel like they need to get the last word in because it makes them feel like they "win" somehow.....pathetic.
Spelling-checkers are the same people who, when they lose an argument, say "oh yeah, well your haircut is ugly" and stick their tongue at you like a 10-year old...same exact thing.
The Spelling/Grammar Police....beware! They are out to get you Laughing

Do not take it personally. We are strangers, mostly. We are unhappy (often, re.. the post). We post crap. We are living in a foreign place. We adopt personas. We hide ourselves. We have the safe anonymity of a forum. We like the engagement and the attention, even when it is arguing about nonsense. Wink

(P.S. a good few of us are lonely and miss actual English language conversations, and will debate the pluses and minuses of showering before shaving or vice versa just to have a chat.... no longer in the English speaking world we do not have all the little chats with cashiers or strangers on the street... unless your Korean is real good... still it aint where yr from. Here is more like where yr from)

I need to tear someone a new one if their English is so bad you wonder how they actually function as an English teacher. I saw one post, someone was trying to convey some important information about a visa run to Osaka but her writing was so poor it was unreadable.

I just wonder if that level of care gets transferred to her students. Bad teachers are bad for all of us.

No one is above common courtesy...not even on an anonymous internet message board. I've heard that some of the more trollish posters here are actually decent people in real life. That makes them cowards in my eyes. If you don't have the balls to talk your keyboard cowboy talk when we're face to face, then you're nothing but a two-faced coward.
