"The South Korean's defection to North Korea is understandable because it is difficult to live here," Soek, who is currently working as a herbal doctor in Seoul, told The Korea Times. "He might have crossed the border under the false assurance that the North will treat him really well."

That's incredible. Is it possible some people think they can find a better life in the north? I have heard nothing but bad news about the place. |

If it really was a defection, rather than a misunderstanding of some kind which I think is more likely, I would think it was a north korean spy returning to base. |

His son had been sent to prison, he drank 1.8 litres of soju , and sailed through a hail of bullets to the North. Hell of a drinking session, imagine waking up to life in North Korea with a mammoth hangover too. |

Are you a wimp? Korean men don't get hangovers. Did you forget that soju is the nectar of the gods?

Korean logic at its finest. Not even the drunkest person could believe it is anything but far more difficult to live in North Korea. |

There are lots of possible reasons for the guy to do what he did. One person mentioned an infiltrator returning to base. That occured to me, too.
Another one is that he is 57 and hasn't seen his hometown since he was 3. Hometown means a lot to Koreans. Maybe he was feeling his age and thought this was the time.
Something else. If his son just went to prison, he could be getting a lot flack from the neighbors. Loss of face is a pretty serious thing.
A lot of people swallow NK propaganda without thinking about it. He could be one of them.
Then there is the soju factor. I've made one or two bad choices when fuelled on that stuff. |

Is that a euphemism for a lack of commonsense? |

Right. Drinking competition. Loser has to go to North Korea. (That's litres btw, not bottles.) |
