Is licorice available here - I heard that I could the root for it at the medicinal markets...but that doesn't sound like the yummy junkfood-type one...Anyone eaten it here??

doubtful- except in foriegner markets. Koreans hate it. I remember bring it to the first day of school here once and giving it to all the kindergartners. I have NEVER seen 6 year olds react negatively to candy, but my god they were spitting it out and yelling. One kid puked. I imagine its the flip-mode of bondeggi.

Yes, the Koreans mostly hate it. Had some hard black buttons sent from PA. The Korean Teachers thought that I had poisoned them. Hey, more for me!

I brought a big tub of the red stuff when I first came here. I gave it to the kids in my school after class and they all spit it out in the stairwell.

Ahh... fond memory.

I gave some black licorice to some of my students and they all said it tasted like medicine. Licorice (the herb) is commonly used in Korean herbal medicine.
