A few weeks ago my hard drive crashed. It was a logical crash. So I suspecting a virus.

I did a virus scan on my other remaining drive and found nothing. Anyway, yesterday I lost my second drive to a logical crash. So I am wondering if someone can recommend a virus program.

Also, I wonder it some sort of electronic interference can cause a logical crash? My computer is jammed close to my TV, fan, speakers and refirgerator....

More info, please. When you say you had a hard drive crash, what do you mean? Did it blue screen? Is the drive not seen? How do you know it's a logical crash?

Did you have operating systems on both drives?

It seems to have deleted/corrupted the files on the dirve. I only had one OS.

It first hit the master drvie, then I installed a new drive as a master and then it hit the slave.

I wouldn't think that electronics is the cause. Korea has a lot of power spikes you know. Do you have a surge protector? Its a good investment.

Bad power can cause a host of problems, corruption being a common one. Think about how good your PSU is as well....enough power? Good power?

What is a "logical" crash?

Logical Crash is just the data.

Physicak Crash is an actual hardware problem

Okay you had two drives, master and slave. The master got corrupted. The slave was fine. Now the slave is corrupted. What kind of errors are you getting? You say you have a virus scanner but then want someone to recommend another virus scanner. But you don't tell us your original virus scanner. It's hard to suggest an alternative when we don't know what we're suggesting an alternative to.

Electronics are shielded and shouldn't pump out a magnetic field big enough to wipe your HD.

I would suspect a virus too.

This really isn't enough info for anyone to make a reasonable judgment. How do you know the files have been deleted/corrupted? What error messages do you get?

I do not get an error message. When I try to read the drive everything frezzes up.

If I take a DOS look at it, it shows 90% of the files gone.

I tried to use a program that retrievces damaged/deleted/corrupted data from a drive and the program shows only a few files as being retireivable.

Get Spinrite and run it. Takes about 20+ hours, but it can recover many "unrecoverable" drives.

If the data is truly gone, it won't work.

When you used the slave as the master, (changed the jumpers) I guess you re-installed windows? Did you format the old master first? Not doing so would simply introduce the virus to the new master as well, if it is a virus and destroy that one as well. I have my suspicions that it's not a virus.

Why do you believe it's a virus? What did you download and run to make you think so? Is your computer not running an AV program?

I checked out the Spinrite website. I dont mean to judge a book by its cover but the website seems a little old and hasnt been updated since June 7th, 2004. They also seem to have no updated documentation. The cost of the program is $89.00. After I purchase it, do I just download it and add a serial number?

I did not format any drive. I currently do not use either drive.

Truly, I do not suspect a virus, but I do not have many other theories other than some sort of electronic interferance due to the fact that my hard drives are in very close proximity to my tv, fridge and fan. I changed my cables and power bar n case it was some problem with electric surges.

Anyway, I appreciate the help from this board. I did not expect such help.

I honestly think it's power mate. Really...a bad PSU or something.

How many devices do you have? 2 hard drives....RAM, optical drives...etc...

Any random reboots? Nothing overclocked?

Not trying to be a jerk, but reloading windows on the slave without formatting to old master (when you thought it may be a virus) is unusual.

Not to rule out a virus....I don't follow virus news at all. Maybe there is one that does what happened to you....

Agree with Demo. This is way more likely than the "virus" theory, which thanks to media hype is always the first thing one hears from friends with problematic computers: "It doesn't boot, I must have a virus"...

Other (less likely?) possibilities:

1. Motherboard / BIOS / CMOS
(check if you can read the hard drives in another machine.)

2. IDE cable
The "teeth" that clip the drive plug into the ribbon could be wonky. I've had this happen, though not spontaneously.

3. Coincidence
Hard drives do fail eventually, but (on average) we're talking 5+ years, at least.

4. Conflicting jumper switches
Double and triple-check that the master/slave jumpers are correctly set on the drives. Also try plugging in one HD to the board, and remove all other IDE drives (CD/DVD, etc) and see if you have any luck.

The second time the hard drive just stopped working was when I was using the Adobe Premier program. I was editing soem video from the hard drive and then all of a sudden it was gone.

Yep...any time the hard drive gets busy with the RAM all kicking in, the CPU going great guns, perhaps the page file being used on the other drive (if that's where it is)...it's when the power draw is most and can cause instability.

I had some power problems in the past (cheap-o power supplies) and when things get intense, that's when it would crash. Luckily, when it rebooted, there was no corruption or loss of data, but still...

A second PSU would cost you peanuts (20~30,000)....2 if your PSU is failing outright. Run 2 if need be. I run one outside the case for fans and graphics card...just to unload the main one. String it in the back....no worries.
