I loaned money to a Korean friend, and he payed me a large sum in those funky 100,000 won bank checks. I've used then before, but these have his name printed on them. I wanted 10,000 won bills, but that's what he left me before he went on vacation.

I went to the bank they were issued from, and they demanded my passport to make them into bills. I'd rather not have anything stamped in my passport. When I transferred money last time, they didn't bother. I suppose I could try at my bank, too, but I have a feeling they're going to want to put that in some computer, too.

I really don't care to have this go on some record, as it will look like I'm getting money from another source and could cause me trouble.

Any suggestions? Can I spend the bank checks at regular stores?

It's really a hassle!

(and I'm sure sick of Daves being so slow and having so many PhBB errors!)

hey gollum,

in answer to your query. i too have had payments made with those checks. i gave my last lot (400,000) worth to the barman at the pub. all i did was sign them over to him. he knows how to it so no record for you except for you sign. or just give it to a korean mate to go cash at a bank for you, no probs there, and really no skin off their nose. or you could just go to a store and ask them to cash for you, maybe a mom and pop convbenience store, im sure they wont mind if they have the cash on hand. anyway, it doesnt really mater at the bank. i did it for my wife (girlfreind at the time) with a cool million in her bosses name, and i dont think they stamped my passport. hope this helps

The passport is for ID purposes only. To make sure it's a legit cheque and not something a person made on their printer. They mark down your passport number on the back so they know who gave it to them should it prove to be a fake. Same deal with Koreans, only they mark down their government ID number on the back instead.
