How do I record just a piece of a movie and make a clip? Can windows media player do this or do I need other software?

Yes, you need other software.

You need a way to get the video into your computer. Either a video capture card, or via the "Firewire" port, if you have one. Firewire is often labeled IE1773 or some funky number like that, and is smaller than USB. Sorry I can't remember the exact number. To input the video into firewire, you'll have to have some sort of digital video camera that has a firewire connection too. Then you'll have to buy the cord.

You might have a program called Windows Moviemaker. That will capture and stuff, but it's a basic program.
