... the strangest thing for sale. I was walking past the pet section, and lo and behold, in its own terrarium (alone) was... a large beetle (probably an African species). I crouched down in strange fascination (I like yucky things), and I determined that it wasn't food for the furry rodents (after all, what eats beetles? Not the rabbits or hamsters). I wanted to find a salesperson to ask the price, but (this is a rare, rare occasion in a Korean store) there wasn't a salesperson to be found. Maybe they will start selling tarantulas soon... |

Do you like those big beetles?
If you do, then you need to find the new "ZOO ZOO LAND" which opened Just east across the road from the North side of Sunae Station (Lotte Dept. Store) in Bundang. They've got 2 or 3 big glass cages full of tons of those gross bugs -- fighting each other and crawling on branches.
Lots of breeds of dogs and cats, too.
Doubt the places will be in business too long, though. Nice concept, and an interesting design to the building, but the location sucks. |

It's probably one of the Korean indigenous species. They are much more common in Japan and can be caught in the wild fairly easily in the smaller cities with surrounding forests, but the Korean versions were heavily impacted by deforestation in the late 19th century, and then nearly eliminated during the Korean War due to deforestation by wildfire. The population is slow to rebuild as they are not fast breeders, and live most of their time hidden in the ground away from predators. |

Why not mention the real reason Gord? But you love the Japanese far too much to admit to the beetle genocide carried out by them. |

Deforestation was carried out by the Korean populace for a number of reasons in the mid 19th century, ranging from economic pospects to simple wood for heat. When the first Americans arrived in the late 19th century, they were quite surprised at the complete lack of trees within sight.
One of the first things the Japanese government did when they were given control of the peninsula by the kingdom in the early 20th century was to begin a very aggresive reforestation program as well as developing a sustainable infastructure of delivered energy so that people would cease cutting down the closest tree they could find to burn for heat.
I know you're just trolling, but I gave an informative response because I suspect others would be interested in reading about this little piece of history. |

Last summer, standing at the front door, waiting for my wife to hurry up and get the lead out, I spotted one of those beetles crawling across the pavement in front of our house. The wife snatched it up and five minutes later had sold it to some kid who lives down the street.
Now that's enterprise!

So that's what that place is. I thought it was a hagwon!
I'll definitely have to take the little girl there. She'll absolutely flip.

I thought it was one of those stupid places you take your dog for dog coffee and dog spaghetti or whatever.
Gord vs. Daechi...I'd pay good money to see that. |

If memory serves they're Stag beetles (Lucanus cervus).

I too was surprised to see them being sold as pets, especially outside the railway station in Kyoto. |

Yeah, they're stag beetles. I worked in the country (a village beside a mountain) and a teenage student brought them to class. He knew some rotten log where they lived. He'd have beetle wars on desktops. To piss one off, get it ready for battle, he'd tap it on the head. Then its front pincers would start compulsively groping for mayhem.
He fed them sugar. Eventually, when their visas expired, he returned them to their homes after refusing them severance. |
