At the moment 3 days per week I have 8, 45min classes then 7 for the other two days.

These classes run one after the other from 3-9:30pm w/only five minutes between them.

I've mentioned that I'm not happy doing eight and get told they will change timetable etc but have not done anything so I'm wondering if how aggressive i should be over this issue

Ya should have been checking your contract instead of worrying about the hotties last Feb.

Now you have a contract for 30 hours per week with no fixed number of classes and you get to do 30 CONTACT hours per week.

Sorry for that cheap dig, but I have been saying and repeating since forever that people have to ASK about it BEFORE they sign on the dotted line.

Most hakwons work their teachers 30 classes of 50 minutes each with a 10 minute break to make the hour.

You are getting screwed but your contract probably doesn't say how many classes or how long they are or what constitutes a contract hour.

Your options are:

A) See if you can negotiate a better deal with your boss. You will have to give something to get something.

B) Play hardball cause you are entitled to a 30 minute break after 4 hours of work and you are not getting it with your schedule.
---------------------------------------------------------------
quoted from the labor standards act:
Article 53 (Recess Hours)
(1) An employer shall allow a recess period of more than
30 minutes (those are consecutive minutes) for every 4 working hours and more than 1 hour for every 8 working hours during the working hours.
(2) A recess period may be freely used by workers.
----------------------------------------------------------------

C) Put up with it until contract renewal time then negotiate a better deal or find a new job.

D) Quit and find a new job. READ your contract next time.

thanks, and you're right re what is stipulated in the contract. my understanding though is that this is fairly standard, though many hakwons don't actually schedule a maximum number of classes.

I may be wrong on this last count, and this is part of the reason why I am asking the question. Basically I think if this is excessive in terms of what most people are doing why should I do it?

Dude,

Many hogwans try to milk you for all they can. I was did a verbal agreement. I was going to work at this place for a week. They told me W600,000, I negotiated to 650,000 and I thought it was for 30 hours. I ended up teaching 9 classes, which was a tad bit more. I would have never done it if they I knew they would pull that. But, they needed to fill in for 2 more weeks because a teacher suddenly disappeared. I renegotiated and got a sweeter deal. I am glad I am a fast learner. Before I came here, I would never have tried that. Since I have been here, I realize you better be aware that people will take you for everything they can.

Yes, it is a bit excessive compared to most (but not all) other teachers in hakwons... but you signed a contract to agree to it.

Unfortunately there is NO law to protect you from your own foolishness.

You should be over 6 months so unless you contract has you screwed over your airfare or some deposit, you can quit and find a better job (option C).

The school of hard knocks is a rough teacher, but it is very effective. Most people don't make the same mistakes more than once or twice.

And as an aside: today I had 2 classes and I am usually scheduled for 17-22 classes (40 minutes each) per week in a public school (before they cancel classes for other events).
