I feel I am not that useful except as a selling point for the boss. I am not helping the (basic level) kids more than
most Koreans could, those with good English of course.

I would like to be useful. I would like to teach those who actually know a little English. Because I know mine is excellent.

(never mind yr smarmy remarks.. i'll kick yr ass if it comes down to it)

Jaj, I don't suppose it would make you feel better to tell you that the younger the students, the more important it is to hear a native speaker. Our mimicking skills tend to decline quickly as we go thru childhood, so you're doing the most good when you teach toddlers.

With me it completely depends on the class. With some classes I think I'm very useful indeed; with others a Korean drill seargent with an English tape recording would be the only way they'd learn anything from hearing a native speaker. One of our KTs English is so poor that I can't see how they'd learn any conversational English from her, and a few of her classes that I also teach are quite teachable. Unfortunately 1.5 hours a week with them just isn't enough to build up a good base. I'm also quite useful in terms of teaching her, as she's willing to ask for help.

Ok, here's my smarmy remark; 'Are you kidding?'.
Over at our school the Korean teachers barely speak English. It all depends on your approach but to get the kids to make full sentences instead of burping out one word answers...I wonder if these one word, burped answers aren't a result of having Korean teachers who barely speak English, and can hardly make full sentences themselves?
Because you are a native speaker the English Gods love you! Remember that, always, and shine on waegukin!

well, besides my obvious TESOL graduate credentials and numerous years of EFL teaching experience with various levels accumulated in many different countries, i am handsome assed, could bark out a tune as good as any hogwan teacher and play a wicked, ripping, flaming red electric guitar, baby. Cool

My new gig, all the Korean teachers are almost native speakers. It's a joy. One of the male teachers is fluent in 6 languages. It's still frustrating at times when kids just don't get it. From my bosses perspective, if the kids are happy, she's happy. Works for me. Smile

Giving them the confidence that they can make themselves understood by a native speaker goes a long way.

I guess it just feels like a lot of classes are nearly useless, but maybe the kids pick up some English here and there even when the classes do not go so well or smoothly.

If you like your kids and your classes, the kids will know. The little kids mimic more than learn, and they will try to speak in the pitch and tone in which you speak.

I suggest teaching them short english songs. They may not fully understand the words, but little kids love songs with actions and they will pick up on the pronunciation.

Christ dude.
You've been like this for years.
"Am I pathetic?"
"Do you have low self esteem too?"
"Can you get through the day without alcohol?"
"Why am I alive?"
"Should I kill myself?"
AFN says I should ask you if you're thinking of hurting yourself.
Are you...?

I just wanna die! How dumb are army people that they need to be told a guy banging his head on the table moaning "I just wanna die" is a tip off he might be thinking about killing himself.

Anyway, yeah sometimes I wonder if I'm doing any good. Once in a blue moon I see evidence. The other day my boss was surprised my 8 year olds knew some words. "Where did you learn those?" They said they learned the words from me.

So yeah.

I do remember a grade school teacher here said she noticed a huge difference in English ability when you compare kids who go to hagwon and kids who don't go to hagwon. We are making a difference.

And as the other guy above noted, part of your job is just making the kids feel good about speaking english with a honkey. You have to create an environment where it's okay for them to make mistakes, they won't lose face making a mistake. You won't laugh at them.
