Did anyone catch me on SBS Monday morning in the roundtable discussion with school owners and immigration officials, discussing Candians working illegally on 6 month tourist visas, and selling illegal drugs?
Hahahha... joke.
Actually, I was on SBS, but they interviewed me and some ajummas/halmonees as we crawled out of an 80 degree Celsius/176 degree F. jimji-bang. They recorded it on Friday night. I thought it was some school project, but it turned out to be some SBS show. Just a random happening. I didn't know that until a student sent me a text message about it, and two people said they saw me.
I told them I felt like a piece of "people mandu", but they didn't interpret my bad Korean correctly. They got the "mandu" part, anyway. |

Wow, interesting Derrek! Want to catch that if you can get a link or something. SBS? Hmmmmm....they usually only document negative stuff, right? I hope they didn't find any startling info about saunas/jimjillbangs because I love going to those!! Even so, I'll keep going to them anyway.
Or maybe they are interviewing you because you crawled from a sauna at 80C!! Damn that's hot

No, it was some show about sweating or something. I recorded a clip of it to put on my site later, but thanks to copy protection of the wonderful new Windows Media Player, even screen capture software won't work. I had to "telescene record" the clip.
You can see it by going to http://tv.sbs.co.kr/plan/plan_tv_main.jhtml?year=2005&month=08&day=01 and clicking on the 7:30 am show. I'm about 7 minutes into the piece.
In typical Korean fashion, you have to have a membership ID to that SBS site to see it. I had to borrow one. |

Sorry, but am I the only one that is wondering: Why would anyone go to an 80 degree sauna in the middle of summer?
No, seriously. What's the point? Is there a market for this sort of torturous thing in the middle of the hot season? Not hot and humid enough for people out there? I should charge admission to my "no aircon" classrooms during the summer. Better yet, charge a fee to enter my brick over apartment. I'd make a killing! |

Hhahaha... I was joking about this very thing with the ajummas inside.
I wanted to give it a try to see if i could stand it. My gf wouldn't go in. I stayed in there for maybe 2 minutes. I get this creepy feeling in that room, and am reminded of the guy who got boiled to death in SHOGUN.
The main reason I go there is to enjoy the relaxing atmosphere of the oriental medicine room, and the brown brick room, which smells something like brown sugar. These rooms are around 30 degrees celsius. Can't remember the names.
If anyone wants to give it a try, this sauna is called Itaewonland, and is located at the top of "The Hilltop Hotel" about 30 steps past Polly's Kettle. Itaewonland has 5 floors, including pools of various temperatures and a sleeping room where you can sleep on marble slabs inside horizontile phonebooth-sized boxes. Oh, the comfort.  There is also a PC Bang, small restaurant, lots of comicbooks, board games, and massage chairs.
Several dramas have been filmed there. I find it to be a much more enjoyable place than the "newer" looking saunas which look like an adobe hut in the corner of a big boring room. Itaewonland is new, too -- only about 2 years old.
You might recall that they didn't used to let foreigners in. Now they do. They really aren't all that busy, especially considering that Hamilton Hotel closed. If they were closer to 5,000 won or 6,000 won a night, I'd stay there more often. But 10,000 is a little more than I like to pay for a place without a comfortable bed. I'm beginning to think they won't be around much either, since they don't look that busy. They also have some special "wading ponds" that are supposed to be filled with water, but aren't. I kind of get the feeling that they are in "won consumption mode."

That was an okay interview, and I got to talk about space which is always good. 30 minutes of sleep the night before, but you get makeup put on before going on. After the interview I took off and fell asleep in a park which ruined the rest of the day.
Arirang feels so late 80s-early 90s; it's kind of a different world inside their building. And extremely quiet. |
