I have to do evaluations for my 2-5 year olds. I'm having such a hard time. I can't give em a 5 and I don't wanna give them less then perfect because i'm happy they're at least trying. Has anyone else had to rate a 3 year old?? and how did ya do it? Confused

As much as I hate to say it (it goes against my very being)...don't be emiracal (sp?). With kindy, you HAVE to get away from numbers. The first thing they're going to do is be happy becasue they got a 4 in conduct (!) then they'll look over and see that Soo Ji got a 5 (!!). Oh no! That means they aren't as good. No with kindy, you really have to be pure subjective (very good, great, etc.) and more importantly you have to follow the 3 statement rule: 2 good statements one bad.
EXAMPLE: Jack is a very good student. He's always try hard and is full of energy. This energy can lead him to be a distraction to others at times though.
Example 2: Suzy is very friendly and loves to help other students. Her reading is very good, she can read all of the colors and shapes, but she has quite a bit of trouble pronouncing them. I'm sure that this can be corrected in time.

I have always refused to give grades for kindy. I have given statements.
"I am so proud of___. He/she has started to....has mastered.....has begun to show respect.....

If a child is just awful, I would say, "He/she seems to be having trouble adjusting to school. I understand that this may be the first time that___ has been in a school setting. I am sure in time....." I also have said , "He/she seems to be having a hard time in understanding instruction._____has so much energy.

I know it may be hard to write these evaluations, but you have to try. With kindy I find there is always something to praise. "I am so happy to inform you that _____ loves to share, loves to help me, loves to look at picture books.....

If your boss tells you that you must give grades, say that you are sorry but you can't grade 4 year olds, and ask them to do it. Just write your comments, and if a parent complains, you can pass it off.
