Hi,
How can I find teaching jobs at the universities in Seoul?
I have one year experience at a hagwon and now I have a B. Ed. from Canada. Can I get a job with that?
Any help or links would be great. |

The beav says, "Connections" - and I have to say that I agree.
While I don't doubt that I could probably line up a uni job on my own . . .maybe. . . both the university jobs I have had in this country were made through the introduction of someone who knows someone. Minimal interviews and talk time - the connection was the seal on the deal. |

With just a BA it is not very easy to get a University job in Seoul.
Yes, it can be done, but with just a B.A you have a better chance out of Seoul . THen again, if you wait till after the semesters start, and schools become desperate, and who knows?
And it is correct to say if you have connections, anything is possible. |

The BA thing is a myth. At my school half of us only have a BA. I went up against Phds and MAs and I still got the job. They help a lot but if you set yourself far enough about the other applicants in your interview and teaching demonstration you'll get it. |

This is my 3rd year here and I'm sentenced to a very legitimate job at a public high school. That experience and a CELTA I feel should land me in a uni spot if I choose to stay next year but thats too much time here. I have a hospital background and I'd like to get a medical English position but I'd take any uni job with the real vacation time just as soon. I'm going to start writing hello letters early. |

Actually, I am finding teaching public\private high school to be a more enjoyable experience than my previous experience at a university (in China).
And don't bet on your experience + CELTA to land you a uni position. I have 5 years experience and a CELTA and was told by two universities that I was too old and didn't have "the right look."
It's all about the nepotisim. |

It's too bad that "looks"(age, race) account for so much here....how you look does not indicate how well you teach....or do anything for that matter.
It all boils down to discrimination, and is something we should have figured out when we applied to work in Korea and they asked for a photo.
Connections will get you everywhere in life....It's definitely who you know, and not what you know(or what degree you have)....This is true in most parts of the world I'm sure. And once you get in there, it's all about how much butt you can kiss..... |

No offence meant to my colleagues and other uni teachers- but we aren't generally the youngest and prettiest lot of westerners. In fact, we tend to be a pretty geeky bunch, in general.
It may be true that hogwons want the young and the beautiful- but, sorry again, those that I know that teach at them also tend towards the average end of the scale in the looks department, albeit they tend to be younger.
Of course, as so many western men think that Asian women are just so beautiful compared to western women, the opposite may operate with Koreans- maybe westerners are exotically beautiful to them, also.
Looks and age matter, to be sure, but I suspect a bit less that people think. Provide a good resume and some experience, and you can get a job, get to Korea, and you can improve your job prospects. |
