Parking lots are an American Imperialist idea. Why build parking lots when a sidewalk, a bus lane, or a hospital emergency ramp will do? This kind of creative parking can be gotten away with because Koreans have brilliantly merged two technologies: the age old (embroidery) and the new (cell phones). Hence the cell phone pillow. Many cars keep their owner's cell phone number prominently displayed on the dashboard. The preferred way of doing this is having your cell # artfully embroidered on a little pillow. This little pillow is then placed on the driver's side dashboard. If someone needs access to their front door or heart-lung machine, all they have to do is ring the number on the pillow and the owner will graciously come move his car.
It's the little things about Korea I love.
I wonder if anyone has cooked up an urban legend like the one that was circulating about those really gaudy Kleenex boxes and air fresheners people used to put in the back of their cars, you know the ones that looked like Haile Selassie's crown. There was an urban legend that this was a sign to other blacks that it was a car owned by a black person. Therefore don't rob it and perpetuate black on black crime. |
