Japanese Encephalitis Warning Issued
The Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention (KCDC) on Tuesday issued an advisory for Japanese encephalitis as encephalitis-carrying mosquitoes have been reported in Pusan. Japanese encephalitis causes high fever, headache and vomiting. The symptoms may appear between four to 14 days after being bitten by the mosquitoes although 95 percent of those infected with the virus do not show any symptoms. But the mortality rate is estimated at up to 70 percent if infected persons become ill.

Got my shots.
[pats self on back]
Although, after the tremendous fever and splitting headache I suffered last Friday/Saturday, it's probably good for the sake of my hypochondria that this warning was issued today.

Thanks for the info.... but does anyone else think this is possibly another reason for them to hate Japan(issuing the warning early)... and just to add more fuel to the fire, and also to get people to pay up for FIVE injections?
The risk seems relatively low, and other sites I have checked state mortality rate should be about 10-25%.....
Propaganda? |

If I remember correctlty, the irony of the whole Jap Enceph naming deal was that japan is actually the only country in Asia not to have had an outbreak of the disease named after it.
Not 100% sure of the facts, but I heard something to this effect. If I can be bothered later I'll google. |

Five?
In the U.S. they say you need three.
I waited until I came here to get it, and the doctor insisted I only needed one...although it only last for two years because the virus changes. I'm still in doubt about whether I got the right one... |

Do you live in Seoul? You really have nothing to worry about JE is dangerous to those who live close to pig farms. The JE virus is transmitted from pigs to humans via mosquitos. Its a concern in rural areas, not in cities. |
