2 Cape Bretoners arrested in Korea
Last Updated: Mar 22 2005 08:16 AM AST
PORT HAWKESBURY, N.S. - Port Hawkesbury residents are planning a fundraiser to help two local men who've spent the last 10 days in a Korea jail following a bar fight.

Scott Thompson and Jason Beaton, who have been teaching English outside Seoul, were arrested March 11.

Beaton's mother, Joan, says the men were leaving a bar early that morning when they were attacked by several Korean men. When police arrived, they arrested the two Canadians and charged them with assault.

The two families have hired a lawyer in Korea and have been in touch with the Canadian consulate. But they say they don't know what to expect from the Korean justice system. There's no word on when the men will appear in court.

Neighbours in Port Hawkesbury are rallying to help the men.

"They're in a foreign country. The laws are different," said Mayor Billy Joe MacLean. "We understand it can very expensive in Korea, particularly if it's the Canadian that they grab."

Beaton worked at MacLean's bar for several years before heading to Korea. Staff are planning a benefit this Thursday night.

very interesting...I wonder how this will pan out? All we've heard about this has been from Korean media stating "they were illegal teachers" and that it was one Korean man who was attacked.

Those two guys are just lucky they are not in a Mexican jail, anyways I hope they get out soon!

I don't understand where this part of the quote came from. It is NOT in the article on the CBC site.

The article seems like "oh these two well scrubbed Canadian boys were emerging from a pub, probably just about to dash off to help an aged granny across the road, when these savages descended on them from no where, beat the crap out of them, and then the cops arrested the victims because they were foreign!"

Sure that's one possible version. But, really.

"Drunk illegal workers can't find some drunk Korean girl to take home, horny, miserable, they walk out of a pub, drunk, hoot at some guy's GF in a miniskirt and knee socks, words are exchanged, and then blows..."

There are 2 sides to every story. I'm glad we're getting a peak at the other side BUT I always keep in mind the truth usually lies somewhere in the middle.

"Beaton"? Great name for this incident.

Is the population of remote Eastern Canada really so large that the region can afford to supply East Asia with English teachers? Seems that way some days.

Well, I'll be interested in finding out a bit more about this. There is a rather infamous Jason Beaton from Judique near Port Hawkesbury who is notorious as a "scrapper" / hockey player.

He ended up playing in the OHL as a goon but I believe was banned at some point for his behavior.

Please note it might not be the same guy. But according to the CBC story he worked at Billy Joe's Bar in PH before going to Korea, so it would not surprise me if it is the same guy.

I don't know him but my younger sister knows the "notorious" Jason, he played on the same "AAA" Midget team as a couple of my cousins and fighting is one of his favorite things to do and he is quite good at it.

If it is the hockey player, here are his stats from the 1989/1990 season with the North Bay Centenials of the OHL:
Games Played 53
Goals 1
Assists 4
Penalty Minutes 126 Wink
