This has come up before, I know, but I thought I'd ask again anyway. Hopefully some folks can take the time to answer.
How does Seoul compare to other large (or largeish) cities in Korea. I have experience in Japan and I've found that there are a lot of disadvantages in terms of living in a huge city like Tokyo. Osaka, Japan's second city, is big, but much smaller than Tokyo, and a lot more friendly.
I'm wondering if a similar dynamic exists between Seoul and Pusan. |

Most of the wealth and universities and government and just about everything is focused on SEOUL. Not much government money goes towards anywhere else in Korea very much.. Busan does have many of the corporate branch offices.. but its nothing like Seoul where anything that happens in Korea, seems to happen.
Osaka on the other hand seems to have huge a very large international airport.. tons of government money goes into the region with Kyoto nearby.. etc., etc.
Osaka definetely blows Busan away in just about every imagineable category in regards to second cities.
Busan is alright in its own way.. but I wouldn't hold on to any expectations that it is to Seoul what Osaka is to Tokyo. |

Daejeon seems to get a lot of government facilities too

Quick question for you guys then (sorry if this is a threadjack). Why would someone choose to live in Busan over Seoul? I am probably coming over in august or september and am wondering where I should go. I am a single 26 year old Canadian male (from Saskatoon, a small city), I read good (and bad) things about Seoul all the time. But I hear little about Busan or the other cities. Is there really a difference in cost of living from Seoul to Busan or is the ex pat scene any different in the two cities? What advantages are there to be had for a person living outside of Seoul? What are the disadvantages, ect...
thanks,

Busan advantages: Beach, Ocean, slightly cooler summers, and slightly more more mild winters (than Seoul). Busan is also crushed right in between the mountains and the ocean, creating an overall interesting setting.
Expat scene in Busan is generally located around Busan National University.. and around Texas/Russia Town.. and a little bit around Haeundai Beach.. |

Busan is a cool city. Why choose it? There are reasons why one would choose other cities. Ive joked here about Seoul being the best, and Daechidong being the center of the universe. Really though, if it wasnt for the kick ass job I have (Im not bragging. Its the only reason Im in Seoul in the first place) I would be deep in the south. Thats where my heart is, as far as Korea goes anyway.
Why choose Busan?
1. Cleaner air. The city isnt surrounded on all sides by mountains, and the sea winds clear the pollution out of the city.
2. Climate.
3. Heundae beach in Busan.
4. Proximity to lots of cool southern islands. |

DW- I've seen set-ups like yours on eslbusan from time to time and I know kimnjoe gets stuff like that. If you ever want to replicate what you have here, with something down in Busan, I'd get on and stay on the horn with the girls at kimnjoe until hiring periods start up again for their public schools. |

Im too lazy to move again. Im hoping to stay at this school. I like it, Ive never had any problems here. Going to another place would just be pointless. I like Seoul and Busan equally. The city I like most isnt Busan though. Anyway, I think Im gonna stay in Seoul. Cant leave it as Im am king of the place afterall. How could I abandon my subjects? |
