|
|
Situation: you are overseeing the midterm exam (written) of your compulsory freshman English class. You tell the students to separate the tables and that there is to be no talking or cheating under penalty of an F.
Half way through the exam you catch two students cheating (the smart student and the dumb student swapping papers midway through the exam).
What do you do?
This happened in my exam this morning. I quietly took the papers and gave them back to their correct owners. I told them quietly to see me once the exam was over.
The reason I did this and didnt immediately give them both 0 was that the one helping her friend was 35 years old and the one being helped was a 72 year old woman. This is in a class where 95% of the students are 19 years old.
Anyway after the class I basically let them get away with it. The old lady had been in hospital (a real one, not just with the cold) for the first half of the semester and has received a pass from the university. I explained to her that she should have told me that she could not take the exam – as she had only attended on class prior to the exam and that I would understand and make alternative arrangements.
They were both extremely sorry and embarrassed, as was I.
Anyway, what would you do in such a situation? |

it's frustrating.
i had a hard time letting it go when i taught uni here. the problem is, sometimes those perma grinning grammas and gramps don't even hide it. the younger students look on.
it's expected though. and they expect to get away with it, even if it's obvious. confucianism rules. even korean profs at the uni let it go.
you have to keep in mind, some of these older people are only taking your class as a requirement for their jobs. maybe not a 72 year old, but many others need the credit for their careers.
it's not like a freshman class is going to make them able to have a conversation, so i just let it go.
if you see anything blatant, like crib notes... just tuck them under their paper. let them know it's not acceptable, but i would still let them do it.
i encouraged them to be more discreet, so i appeared not to have a double standard with the young'ns. |

I have had old men and women, ( a lot of nuns) and I let them pass. I am a lot harder, (not much) on the 19 year old jokers. Usually if they approach me as a human, it helps their score. |

Yea, let it go. Don't make waves, you'll even get a raise. |

Give em an F. If you let one slip through the net, they will all start thinking that they can get away with it. |
