|
|
CNN wrote Sea of Japan in its article.....oh boy...the "netcitizens" will rally a war against CNN for not using East Sea! Strange thing...East Sea....it's not east of Japan...so why call it east sea? Why not "Middle Sea?" Or North Asian Sea or whatever...
anyway...the test firing is going to start new flame wars! Time to leave korea!
N. Korea in apparent missile test......
North Korea appears to have conducted a test of a short-range missile, White House chief of staff Andrew Card tells CNN. He said it appears the missile landed in the Sea of Japan. |

In Korean, it's the East Sea because it's east of China.
In Korean, China is ߱ () (literally, center/middle nation), so it makes sense to name things relative to China. |

Then how do you explain the naming of the "West Sea"? |

So what should we call the East China Sea?
I'll start calling the Sea of Japan the East Sea when the English start calling the English Channel la Manche. |

Point made.
The English call it the English Channel.
The French call it La Manche.
The Koreans call it the East Sea.
The Japanese call it the Sea of Japan.
Potato, Potato.
Same deal.
Moving on people.
Then again there are a lot of reasons to complain about CNN... |

A buddy of mine said this to me while drunk and it makes a lot of sense.
If Japan was not there what would it be called?
Pacific Ocean.
Thus, Sea of Japan. |

Never underestimate nationalism in Korea. If Japan were not there, and it were called the Pacific Ocean, Koreans would be demanding it be called the East Ocean. |

The Chinese don't refer to it as the Yellow Sea? |

Some do. They are so many different Chinese names for that stretch of water. Yellow Sea, North Sea, Bo Hai Sea, Bo Hai Gulf, Korea Bay,etc. Probably why the Chinese could care less what the Koreans want to call it.
Actually, but international standards, shouldn't it be called the Sea of Korea? |

Very simple. Korea is the hub of Asia and the center of the universe. Everyone shall bow before them and pay geographical fealty to the great ѹα. They have a glorious 5000 year history, are more intelligent than us and have that super food that cures every ailment known to man, Kim Chi. Korea is wonderful isn't it? |

Is the following true?
The English translation of whatever the Koreans call it is "East Sea".
The English translation of whatever the Japanese call it is "Sea of Japan".
If so, there's no reason to change any names because both of them are correct translations of two different names in different languages for the same water.
A rationally flawless compromise would surely be the "East Sea of Japan".
Damn! But the "J" word is still there! |

It's a fine piece of water. It doesn't care what anyone calls it. It was here before us and will be here after we go. God gives much more time to water than to people and their foolish vanities. |
