If you have enough hard drive space you can rip the disc to your drive using DVD decrypter which will remove the region coding. Apparently it will also burn the dvd to a dvd-r disc but I haven't tried that as I do not have a dvd writer.

Some drives also have a cracked firmware.. My Pioneer DVD-RW had a dvd region free firmware flashed, played everything. Google your drive (model number) sometimes they have it, also try doom9.net

I use the VideoLAN player. I watch Korean and American DVDs all the time. Check out http://www.videolan.org/vlc/

Yeah go with the videolan solution. Many of the hacks involve flash ram for you DVD drive and if you don't get it exactly right, your DVD is toast.

If you want to make your player region free, you will need to do a firmware patch of your drive. It's easy enough and only sometimes fries the drive (usually due to applying the wrong patch for your drive make). You should, however, know that a hard burned copy protection mechanism called Macrovision, which is getting more and more common, will disallow you to play any disks that use this feature once you have firmwared your drive. I, for one, wouldn't do it for this reason exactly. Anyways, it's your computer and your decision but make sure you are informed about the process before you take the plunge because there is no going back once it is done.
