Going to Jejudo tomorrow, a last minute thing so I haven't done a lot of research.

It's a long 4 day weekend at my school so me and my GF have most of Thursday (early flight tomorrow) through to Monday flying back in time for work.

The Korean English language websites are horrible, if I like it maybe I'll try and get a tourism job there editing their horrible websites!

We basically have almost four full days which is great. My questions, and I've read some of the FAQ's on Jeju Island, are these.

Which is the nicest beach? I've read Kwakchi is nice, is this still true? and where if it is a nice beach is the best (cheap) place to stay around there. If it's a crap beach then what do you suggest, we want at least one day on the beach.

I quite fancy hiking up the tallest mountain in South Korea, where is a good base to reach it from? Can it be done in a day if we're both reasonably fit?

The lava tunnels things sound interesting, how much time will this take up and where is a good place to stay.

Is Udo island good? I've heard it is a pretty interesting place and if its possible it would be great to spend some time there.

Lastly are we going to get ripped off? I'm pretty good at bargaining and getting a better price than usual for many goods and services, how hard is it to have a great time on Jeju on a budget.

I'm more interested in a unique cultural experience than spending shed loads of money.

Any suggestions for hidden gems on Jeju, obviously we don't have a lot of time so any suggestions to make our holiday a special nice little break. We trying to do this on a budget and would rather spend money on nice meals in locally owned eateries rather than stay in expensive hotels and get ripped off. we'll be quite happy in a cheap place.

Thanks in advance for any advice, if it's particularly rewarding maybe we'll bring you back a nice little souveneir.

Hi Keith:

Well, I guess first question to you is what type of transportation do you have lined up once you get to Jeju? Rental car? Bus? taxi? I would recommend you spend the money and get a rental car, but that's just me.

Halla mountain: Youngshil and Ulimok (my phonetic spelling is crap BTW) are the two most popular routes going up and down Hallasan . No big thing. You can go up and back with a nice lunch at the ramen shack near the top in an afternoon, believe it or not. I did it twice a few months ago. The routes can be crowded from time to time with a combination of self-handphone-picture taking-princesses and older Korean men dressed up like they were tackling the mountains on Mars.

The lava tube: Once you get there it takes about an hour to an hour and a half to walk the length and back of the big hole in the ground. I don't remember anywhere to stay near there. There really isn't anything around there anyway. It's within comfortable driving distance from anywhere on the north side of the island, IMHO, so just stay somewhere else and travel to it.

As far as beaches go, it depends on your personal preferences. Basically, take your pick. I wish I could be more of a help.

Min-Baks on Jeju are like the pimples on a teenagers face. They are everywhere. Take your pick and shop around.

The biggest city is, of course, Jeju City on the north side and Seogwipo on the south. You might just want to stay in the vicinity of each of these for a day or two and then explore the rest of the island from there.

Wish I could be of more help. But I do recommend the rental car if you can swing it.
