1.78 Million Carry Intestinal Parasites
By gender, males showed a relatively higher ratio of 3.2 percent than 1.6 percent for females. "Soil-carrying germs have almost been disappearing. But an eating habit of raw freshwater fish remains problematic," a KCDC official said.

Ha! Good! Now I can win a playful argument I've been having with my K. husband who swears that eating all that raw fish is healthy.
I wonder what's the cure? Kimchi?

That's 1.78 million peoplw. And I believe that is a vast underestimation. I suspect that they are refering to ascarasis giant round worm infestation. That's now a minor problem. Whipworm and hookworm are still very big.

Although they have made vast strides.

unless you take special pills to kill the worms...pretty much everyone has them. Some of them even have a special symbiotic relationship with us that is mutually beneficial.

Helicobacter is the bacteria that causes most ulcers and can be cured with a 2 week course of tablets. It's not a "korean thing"

Full name is helicobacter pyloris. I had it Crying or Very sad and went to Dr. Linton who gave me a week of strong antibiotics and I was miraculously cured!! But yeah.. it's a universal thing, not just in Korea. Korean (or people living in Korea) just have more because of all the raw vegetables consumed...

Korea Center for Disease Control and Prevention said yesterday that for the first time in three decades more people appear to be afflicted with parasitic worms than they were in previous findings.

"But there are people who still enjoy raw fish from the freshwaters which is a cause of liver fluke infections." Patients with liver fluke infection may experience nausea, indigestion, diarrhea and weakness. If not treated immediately, it could lead to infections in the gall bladder and could possibly cause fatal blood poisoning. South Gyeongsang province, near Nakdong River in particular, showed an infection rate of 16.3 percent, which was the highest in the country. Daejeon, near Geum River, had the second greatest prevalence with 13.3 percent of the people affected. Seoul showed a 0.9 percent rate of parasitic worm infection.
