When I try to start up my IBM laptop, I'm getting a message before Windows starts. The message says:

Quote:
Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:

/WINDOWS/SYSTEM32/CONFIG/SYSTEM

You can attempt to repair this file by starting Windows Setup using the origianl Setup CD-ROM. Select 'r' at the first screen to start repair.

Well, I don't have the original CD. So does anyone know of a good English-speaking PC repair shop in Seoul, Cheongju, or surrounding areas who could help me fix the problem. Thanks for any help you can offer. As you might guess, my entire life is on that little C drive.

Always bring your original CDs from home...

Um, isn't a more logical solution to get a Windows CD? I mean if that's all you need to get yourself up and running (I'm sure the CD will come in very handy in the future), then splurge and go see shady in the tunnel.

I can't understand what people have against actually buying their operating system. You'll spend $1500 on a computer but you can't spend another $100 to get a legal, supported copy of the O/S. It's great when it's free but then something gets corrupted and you get the "insert original install CD..." message.

People, don't be so damn cheap.

If you are telling me to go legit, I am. If you are recommending going to a real store to buy the WinXP CD, then I couldn't agree mre. However, I was under the impression that shdy in the tunnel was the only way to get the English WinXP at Yongsan.

This does sound unlikely though. I bought Windows98 SE from a retailer a long, long time ago, and my current install of XP Pro is from Canada....all $230 worth.

I do agree that people can be cheap and foolish, especially the novice user. Trying to deal with cracks and workarounds is no easy feat at times, even for the experienced user.

Personally, I think that the pirated versions that most people in Korea seem to have should bear a new name;

Windows eXPat

I like that. You can buy legit windows English XP at Yongsan. I've seen it there and it was less than 200,000 won. I'm currently using a pirated copy but once longhorn comes out, I'm going legit.

I concur. I had no trouble picking up a legit version of XP Home at Yongsan from the first decent looking vendor I asked. AFAIK it was around 170,000 and they had XP I believe for around 220,000
