Not to single out the UK, I'm sure other countries will be following suit, if they haven't done so already.

Quote:
Mephedrone, which costs as little as $10 a gram, has become the fourth most popular street drug in the U.K. The white powered substance, which is usually snorted through the nose, came out of nowhere late last year has rapidly become Britains new party drug of choice, replacing highs such as ecstasy and cocaine. Its effects are said to be similar to a combination of the two but in this case its legal, cheaper and easier to buy making it a favorite among young people.

And, sweeping the country like a wild fire, it caught the British government by surprise, with worried parents wondering why authorities didnt move faster to ban it.

Apparently, it's derived from a drug called khat. Is this the same stuff they chew in Yemen?

Ha, I was wondering when someone was going to think that up. I mean hell, if they got cocaine from a cocoa plant, someone was bound to do it with a khat plant.

And looks like the UK's drug war is going to grow. Well done UK, well done.

Wait another couple years before it is banned here in the US.

This is just ridiculous. According to its list of effects and side effects, this just doesn't sound like that big a deal. Sure, nothing on that list makes me particularly eager to start ingesting this stuff, but neither does it fill me with dread for the individuals who do; Hell, lower sex drive and lower appetite sounds like something quite a few teens could probably benefit from.

Beside the effects list on this page is a chart from the British Medical journal the Lancet. It charts various drugs based on both dependence and physical harm done. Khat falls below almost everything in both categories. Most tellingly, it falls far (far) behind both tobacco and alcohol.

The war on drugs needs to end.

khat (the natural form, no idea about this chemically "enhanced" stuff) is like having a long-lasting, strong caffeine rush. Just drink a few red bulls quickly and you'll have a similar feeling.

It is practically harmless, so the reason they made it illegal is just because it gets you high?

God forbid people should have any fun! Exclamation Rolling Eyes

Salvia, a plant of the mint family, shows no deleterious side effects except for a short-lived hallucinogen effect on the mind continues to be outlawed. American politicians can't seem to get over the fact that the demand for mind altering substances remains strong and that with the stroke of a legislative pen would just make any such demand disappear. The political class is nuts.

You gotta watch out for those racial supremacist substances. You never know when a simple high can become a hate crime. A fine line indeed and no doubt the catalyst for this prohibition.
