YBM ELS

I have a few specific questions regarding the adult teacher positions
from anybody who recently or currently works in YBM/ELS. If you have
anythng to add, i would be pleased to hear it.

Having read the great detail the website www.ybmhr.com for YBM ELS
provides, First, what experiences have people had with the housing. There are two options, 10 mil Key money + pay 50,000 a month in interest to YBM or 450,000W rent a month to be paid by the teacher deducted from the salary. The 450,000 deducted from the highest salary of 2.2M leaves a
wage of 1,750,000 for 30 hours of split shifts - not rewarding, or is
the key money sufficient to get a decent/good apartment (one room)
near enough to one of the Seoul schools (20-30 min max travel)? Is it
possible to get a decent apartment for this money? Would anyone
suggest one school over another, and if possible, why?

Second, The rules and regulations seem to be overwhelming having
worked in a adult school. Do these rule/regulations/paperwork impact
on working life/personal life, or do they cause more concern in
writing than practice?

Third, schedules, split shifts etc, what sort of hours have you
worked, and required overtime and its impact on your life, especially
the latter?

In view of the wages, schedules, and housing benefit, how has the job
been for you and what sort of real monthly salary have you received after housing?

Thank you.

Re: apartment issue. Where do you want to live? That kind of money would get you a dump in Kangnam. It could get you something better in other areas in Seoul.

Generally your first contract with YBM you'll be lucky to get 1.7-1.8 million. When you take housing out of that, you'll be left with nothing, you'd honestly be better taking the shared housing they offer, where you don't pay anything towards it.

To get 2.2mil from YBM, you would probably need a lot of qualifications and experience. I know someone, this summer, who was offered a position with YBM: 1.9mil and NO housing. That's for 120 monthly teaching hours and starting with a nasty split shift. Take away 4 or 5 hundred grand from this for your housing, and that doesn't leave you very much.

Why would anyone accept an offer this low? I think it's almost insulting!

your always going to teach a split shift with adults no matter what school your with. I subsituted at YBM Yeoungdonpo ELS for a month ( iw ork at ECC) and classes started at 6:30... overtime was on saturdays and usually it's optional it's going to be different from school to school. Better off taking the shared housing..

Wow that's awful.
Effectively they're offering the standard hagwon contract with (factoring in a housing deduction) a salary of 1.4 million.
What a joke.
Do they still make teachers pay close to a million won as a security deposit...?
No wonder.

A friend of mine works at YBM. Pulls in 2.2 per month for his MA and experience. YBM lends him 10 million key money at the interest rate of 50,000 won per month. That secures a non-dump in Kangnam, for which he has to pay 500,000 per month + utilities + maintenance fee. After taxes 2.2 is 1.9, minus everything else leaves about 1.2 at most. For 6:30-11, 8-10, that's not very much.

Why in the world did he settle for a job like that with an MA and experience?

A non dump in in kangnam for that price? Um, my place is 17 pyeong and its nice. But the cost is more like 25million down and 1 million a month. Id be curious what kind of a non-dump your friend lives in. It has to be tiny.

He wanted to teach adults, and couldn't make the university hiring period.
The non-dump is a one-room apartment. New building, far from the subway, about 9 pyung, a/c, quiet, unfurnished.
And, yeah, isn't YBM great to lend the money out at a 6% interest rate? They take in 600,000 a year from the already-poor guy!

I may be wrong but isn't that the deal for teaching strictly adults. you get split shifts and have to pay more for housing? And also somewhere like ybm els doesnt play games like paying you late or suddenly closing down and firing everybody. the stability may pay off in the long run..
