I work at a foreign language high school in Seoul. All of us in the conversation department -- including those that teach conversation for languages other than English -- are extremely upset with the way the administration treats us when it comes to contract and money issues.
Our problems are too numerous to go into detail here, but I will give you a few examples:
1) They don't pay for visas, flights, housing.
2) We aren't paid during school summer and winter breaks.
3) Eventhough it's in our contract, they want to avoid paying half our medical insurance.
We are battling the school at the moment over these and other issues and would love to hear from others who work at foreign language high schools.
Are the conditions above the same at your schools? Specifically, are you paid during summer and winter breaks? Please let me know if the problems we're facing exist for you as well.
I appreciate all help,
Chappa |

Paying for your flight, visa, & housing are not required by law and are in fact merely customary. Most Universities do not pay for flight or visa. I know you are at a high school I'm just mentioning that for some perspective. Housing is almost always provided by a university (Ewha is an exception - no housing)
I have a friend, she just finished teaching at a high school. As a foriegner she was not paid during vacation. This was explicitly stated in her contract so she knew that going in. If it's in your contract you are screwed. If not then I would say you have a legitimate complaint there.
The health insurance thing is defineatly shady, by Korean law they must pay that whether it is in your contract or not.
Personally I don't want company housing: feels too much like I'm an indentured servant then. You do not have housing, ok obviously you have a place to live now. Does your salary compensate for your monthly outlay of rent? If yes, don't complain. You should be making at a minimum at least 300-400 more a month than average for you to be able to say that you are covered on the rent side.
Hope this helps |
